New Amp Day. I’ve had my eyes on this since July. There’s a antique-type shop not too far away that has quite a bit of gear. Nothing too crazy, but the occasional gem (‘67 Mosrite Ventures model, 70’s Bassman heads, in 75 and 100w, just to make a few). I never knew this existed until I saw it: an Acoustic 134, from 1972 (maybe). I think they were going for a Super Reverb vibe. It’s a 4x10, with normal and tremolo/reverb channels, both with two inputs and a bright switch. I picked it up today for $300. It came with the original amp cover (70’s pleather, the best kind).
It sounds pretty good. It’s solid state, but it has some serious volume, which I feel makes up a bit for the ‘deadness’ inherent in old SS amps. Acoustic was the best of the best in the SS department. The reverb is ok, but it’s no Fender reverb. The tremolo is excellent. It’ll be fun. I only got it because it’s so different that the base-line tones I am used to (Fender/Marshall). It’s incredibly heavy, as well…almost as heavy as a Super Reverb, and just as awkward to carry. My music room is on the second floor…this amp will never leave the house.

I hope his back has finally healed.

I had a Peavey 1820 cab with an 18" Black Widow + 2 10" speakers. Sounded unreal looping drums through it, but with a fighting weight pushing 150lbs, it was soon a relegated to a practice space-only option. I miss that monument to aural excess...
Those 1820s are cool. I also had a 70s Randall ported 2x15 that was about 48" wide and taller than an ampeg cab. My wife used it for a couple years and it weighed more than her. Wish I still had a photo of that cab because words don't do it justice.

That sounds amazing! You sure you didn't accidentally grab a subwoofer from a club gig?

Acoustics are very cool. They have their own personality that goes well beyond goofy tube vs solid state arguments. And it's not a love it or hate it issue, it's what you do with it. Serious headroom and crazy tight bottom end. These things were built to withstand ANYTHING, as you've noted with the weight. Make sure the caps are all good (don't worry about it unless it's unusually noisy or weak sounding) and enjoy.

The shop I got it from takes all gear to a music shop for set up and a check over. They do any repairs that are necessary. The only downside is that there is no footswitch. I ordered and enclosure for one, though…
