Honestly, you can probably get away with just putting a jumper or a 20 ohm resistor (or whatever resistor you have on hand that's close to that value) on the middle and fully clockwise spots where the trim pot would go. I've built four or five of these now and every single time I wind up setting...

I would probably take an audio probe to each component starting from where the signal hits the circuit and see if it sounds clear right at the beginning/where it starts to get more distorted and muddy. Might be worth seeing if there's a specific spot that the audio signal changes in quality?
