    JFET Shootout

Hi Chuck, Sure, pic attached. In my opinion people in general mean magnitude when they say "higher VP" or "lower VP", like "2 is higher than 1", or "1 is smaller than 2", but they know that Vp for n-JFETs is negative, so mathematically "-2 is smaller than -1" and vice versa. So when you...

    JFET Shootout

Just to add a small curiosity (a positive one, actually). I was looking through my J113 "collection" to find one for Q1 in the Viceroy that would bias up to 5V on the drain using the resistors from the schematic (10k drain and 1k8 source). The SMD ones I tested didn't bias right, VP too big. But...

    ROG Britannia CB Mod

Hi all, Here's a vero for the Britannia CB mod. I followed the version 1.2 schematic in the Boneyard. I stuck a 470nF ceramic in the power filtering section, because there was space for it (it's on top of the opamp) and it never hurts. The Brilliance pot I renamed to Presence, as per Chuck's...

This Week on the Breadboard - ROG Britannia

Finding J201 transistors that biased up with the given resistors went pretty quick. The 2N5457 was harder. I tried 50 SMD equivalents and only four or five went over 5V. One of them went up to 5.8V. It has a pretty high Vp of a little over -1V. So I decreased R3 to 3K65 and that was that. The...

This Week on the Breadboard - ROG Britannia

Thanks! I got a bunch of J201. I should be able to find some that bias like yours then!

This Week on the Breadboard - ROG Britannia

Hi Chuck, I'm wondering if in August '25 you used J201 for Q2 and Q4 and the drain/source resistors from the schematic above? Or did you use SK193 & SK193 like earlier?

    Test Signal Generator

I built the sig generator from Valvewizard in '24. It's got a pretty good range and I like that I can set the output volume. The oscilloscope in one of the pics also has a sig gen, but you can only select the frequency (and also it offers other shapes than sin, which the Valvewizard does not)...

    Continuity Issue

I just pulled the cable out of my speaker (amp was off) and measured sleeve and tip for continuity. DMM started beeping and showed 4 to 9 Ohms resistance.

    Continuity Issue

Isn't that to be expected, given the output towards the speaker have a very low impedance, like 4 or 8 ohms? I never built an amp, so I might be wrong. But if there's just 4 Ohms or 8 between your DMM pins it might just start beeping.

    Diablo CB mod

Hi all, Here's a vero layout for this rock machine. Thanks for sharing the mods to CB! I checked the voltages in my build and they look good. It also passed the IDSS check that is described in the Boneyard thread. It was a fun and rewarding build! Great sounding overdrive. All the best...

    OD-1 with opamp buffers

Actually, 100p is barely noticeable, even cranked. I sort of liked 330p. But I play Volume high and Drive at 9 o'clock, so that's why. But I mean I just put a socket, it's not baked it. Can be changed to taste.

    OD-1 with opamp buffers

Actually, let me add one more thing. I was also playing with status LED switching on the breadboard, because I had seen people add a cap sort of into the LED resistor, like here for instance. So I tried it out, but I could still hear the switch action. Then I had this idea to do the switching...

    OD-1 with opamp buffers

Hi all, Fan of the SD-1 here. I built the PedalPCB Oddity and am actually liking it a lot. Sure, no tone pot, but the way it's set is fine. It's tight (Tuco from Breaking Bad comes to mind). And one less knob to worry about. After I built the Oddity I put the circuit on a bread board. I...

Ticking sound in JFET overdrive - proximity to power supply?

Hi! Maybe audioprobe the board to find out which part produces the ticking? Last weekend I put something on the breadboard and it worked fine alone. But when I connected another pedal to it it went crazy making a loud popping noise. Turned out it was something stupid, I had connected the output...
