This is the first time I've attempted to wrangle a PedalPCB pedal into a 1590b. It went off without a hitch!
The RAT is my favorite overdrive/distortion circuit, especially when playing with my mod shop strat with the pure vintage '61 pickups in it, which is my go to on most days. I have a RAT 2, one of the newer production ones with the OP07 chip in it. It's a fantastic pedal, but I wanted to see whether the OG circuit with the LM308N really made a difference.
I bought a few LM308Ns from Tube Depot, they were spendy but seem legit. After shooting this one out with the RAT on my board, I honestly think that my build wins out. It's slightly fuller sounding, I don't know for sure whether that is due to the op amp or just component tolerances, but I'm really digging it. And look how much space it will save on my board! Or maybe I'll just keep them both on the board, one for lower, one for higher gain.
As for the name, I lived in Nicaragua for a couple years in my early 20's. They have an old satirical folklore story/theatrical play that dates back to the 16th century called "Macho Ratón", which translates to Macho Mouse. The Macho Ratón is the main character and wears a mask that always seemed a bit haunting but kinda metal to me.
Anyways, I'm pretty stoked on this build. It was a simple one and it sounds fantastic. I'm going to do a turbo rat next, also in a 1590b.
Rock on.
