DEMO [perf/wood] Maxon ST-9 Super Tube Screamer

i’ve built this circuit a few times now; vero, pcb, tagboard, and now ‘perf/wood’.



inspired by the success of the perf/wood big muff, and after finding a perf layout for the ST-9 on effectlayouts, i decided i was going to attempt to do this board style again with my favorite overdrive circuit.

same method as before.
- print layout
- glue to wooden board
- drill relevant hole positions
- sand, varnish, repeat. (+ stain)

then the really fun part, loading the board:





(^ this 5089 was upside down and then i wondered why it wasn’t working properly lol)

used the same LF353H opamps as I did with the tagboard ST-9 build, and some nifty looking 1N914s that appear to test the same as regular ones.

If you used a little sliver of mahogany or ash or something you could honestly probably sell it to some cork sniffers for the “tonewood” pcb lol

yeah a proper piece of grainy hardwood would be so much nicer (although difficult to acquire in ≤5mm thickness).

here i've just cut a piece from a length of paulownia 'hobby wood', from the local hardware joint. it's pretty pale and dull so i tried to make use of a 'mahogany' stain this time for a bit of grain accentuation...

actually, i forgot to disclose in the op above - the board seen above actually snapped in half while i was sanding it.
with that many holes in-line close together along the grain axis - im not really that surprised that it did. fixed with some clamps and PVA glue and probably for the better tbh

cheers i just like using those bigger caps on non-pcb builds where the spacing allows it. the 1uF box caps are a bit out of place but they’ll have to do lol
