OTHER Drill PSA save yourself some money

Short version: Measure all your template coordinates and triple check them.

Long version: So a friendly reminder about templates. Measure at least 3 times before you put it on your Tayda drill Dashboard. I recently have been building the Aionfx Lovetone projects and got several enclosures done at once. As pedal builders we look for patterns. Most of our wonderful pcb creators tend to stick to patterns for pots etc…. It must be part of our dna, lol. Due to my carelessness I assumed and didn’t take a close look and fouled up an otherwise nice enclosure. I am working on the ring stinger, flange with no name and also the doppelgänger. I spent so much time making sure the pots and switches were right I didn’t pay attention to the foot switches. Well the doppelgänger and ring stinger both have 2 foot switches so naturally they would be in the same place right? Wrong! The ring stinger foot switches are mounted further down the enclosure and more to the inside. This is to make room for the transformers mounted to the foot switch daughter board. So my enclosure is now just an ornament. It’s far enough off there is no way to make it look pretty and make room for the transformers. Of course the footswitch matches the flange with no names outer switches, lol. Hopefully this helps someone. I have already fixed my template on tayda and gonna order a new one. I did go ahead and verify and test fit the rest of it.

This is my first in a while, but it has happened before and I would be silly to think it won’t again, lol.

Probably cost more in steel stick, lol. There is also 7 jack holes on the top as well. Under normal circumstances I would just hand wire the switch instead of using the daughter board. With this particular design it’s just not possible.

That's why I haven't used Tayda's drill-service yet:

It would take weeks to a month to discover I'd borked the measurements.

So I meticulously-measure and drill things myself, and then I know right away I've borked the enclosure.

In fact, I just assume ahead of time I'll be borking the enclosure.

I love the service. It beats the poop out of hand drilling. I looked the other day and I have ordered over 75 enclosures. I have only messed up 3. I am still batting pretty good.

The hardest part is having to use 3 different sets of numbers. That’s 3 ways to jack it up. Most of the board sellers are gracious enough to give us measurements. Aionfx happens uses inches. So you have to convert inches to mm’s for the tayda service. Then to use the UV service you then have to convert it to a different set of numbers for Illustrator because they use a different center point. While it sucks and could be easier it’s worth it. Even if I jack one up periodically.

Been there. Got at least 4 enclosures in a box waiting to be filled and repurposed. (Will probably never happen.)

You could wire the transformers off-board if it doesn't trigger too much ocd.

^^
I was more trying to be funny than anything.
There's truth to my post, though. I've borked so many enclosures I just expect I'll bork the one I'm about to drill.
The more meticulous I am measuring, it seems the more the gods of Hubris laugh louder and bring their thumbs down harder on my efforts.

I do intend to get using the UV-printing and drilling from Tayda ... soon I hope.
