    re-tinning a pre-tinned tip

Wet the tip. Twist it around in the air until it's hard. 🤣

I think the tinned for lead free is just rohs compliance.

    re-tinning a pre-tinned tip

You leave a blob for electronics soldering irons, unless you are using something with caustic flux like a plumber or stickman. It's just to prevent oxidation of the tip, which probably doesn't matter in Utah.

    re-tinning a pre-tinned tip

I only use the tinning paste down the road. When I've left it dry or plugged through a plastic bag and scrubbed it or it generally isn't taking solder well. New tip: heat it up. Glob as much solder as you can on it. Clean. Go. Hakko is playing that tip with better stuff that what's in that tub.

I don't think a MATAMP or OR120 would be very popular. Definitely shouldn't do one.

    General capacitor questions

Audio grade El capw should have a lower self noise and low/almost no ESR. I generally try to avoid them in the signal path when able, but I'm a corksniffer. if they are just decoupling caps, they can often be replaced with a large film cap. If they are also part of a filter (cap in series with...

Ample Alpaca - less low end and less gain mod?

Lowering the value of C6 could be of benefit. As mentioned, that's a pretty aggressive filter. Even at barely on(1k) corner frequency is ~4k and at max it's 48Hz! A lower value pot could also be used. A 25k pot at max would be 193Hz A 10k would be 482Hz

    Tweaking an Arachnid Build

Changing R18 will allow some more signal but it will also alter the HPF formed with C12 Stock it's corner freq is 72Hz Changing R18 to 100R changes it to ~720Hz Oops, I misread. You could lower R19 and 21. If that gets you enough change, the good enough. It's going to alter the feel of the...

    Tweaking an Arachnid Build

100 ways to Detroit If you bend the pins and want to reverse it, 50/50 on being able to be d them back AND insert them into a socket correctly. Conversely, if you cut the trace, you only need to solder blob pins 8 and 9 together to reverse it. I would just form 1/8w resistors and tack them to...

    Tweaking an Arachnid Build

I believe you could cut the trace between pin 8 and pin 9 on 074, then add a resistor between pin 8 and 9 and also pin 9 and ground. You can use a calc to set the gain. This is a non-inverting gain stage. Using a 1k for both would net a gain of 2, which may be enough.

    Lt1054 negative voltage grounds

Separate signal ground and power ground isn't an uncommon practice. Easy to do on a BB. Just use separate rails and converge them at the DC jack/power in. Edit to add, isolated Digital ground is also used pretty commonly.

SOLVED Lab Rat Gated on LED Setting

Switch has nothing to do with it. It's either DC from the cap or tube or the LEDs picking up enough electrons to cause offset. As crazy as it sounds, I'm inclined to think the later because it only happens with the LEDs. Definitely try the foil, as dumb as it sounds, it's low cost and short...
