VFE always have impossible pots. I just made my own for the Klein bottle project which required a dual C10/C100 I just took a dual C100K apart and combined it with a C10. If you really want one that might be your best bet it isn't that hard.

Are you sure you are sure this is not due to a poor connection due to the 3pdt board soldering? I don't know why people are soldering them like this but filling them is a normal commercial practice. Just fixed an EHX pedal where every lug was filled.

It would be the 2SK30A both are FETs. I don't know how much of a difference if makes but people I respect in the pedalbuilding community have struggled to get it to work properly and claimed it was the VGS on the FETs so if you have some laying around try it out.

Know people have found low Vgs work better with this circuit. People have had issues with transistors with too high of a Vgs I believe they settled on using 2N5457 for the best swell results. Not sure if that is your issue but seems like people routinely have issues with this build including...

It looks really good, etchings such a commitment. I have only had good results like you with stuff chemically similar to the PNP. I now just do subpar toner transfers and stamp letters in.
