    A couple of Muff-style builds

I haven't posted any finished builds in a while (mostly because I've been too busy breadboarding), but here are a couple of Muff-style pedals I built for a friend who is crazy about them. First is a stock OpAmp Muff (Dream Fuzz) on a Tayda Copper Hammer enclosure: Next is a Muffin Fuzz...

    Sandspur

    +1 for BC183!

    Progress!

I would agree with this for the most part, except for the Rangemaster. I found 4n7 to be a little too low a value (i.e. too bright, lacks a little body) to my ears in most tests. I tend to use 5n6 caps that test slightly lower than that in that circuit, because it's what I found to work best...

    Gauging General Breadboard Interest

Why didn't I think of that? I gotta do it!

    Gauging General Breadboard Interest

Hahaha A whole bunch of different things. There's a modded Rangemaster, a Ram's Head, a couple of fuzz faces (Ge PNP and Si NPN), Tone Benders MKI and MKII, Vox Tone Bender, Zonk Machine, Colorsound One Knob Fuzz, Chase Tone Secret Preamp...

@Gordo did you figure out how to squeeze a little more volume out of it after all?

UV Printing/Drilling/Faceplates through AmplifyFun (Tayda alternative)

Thanks for sharing that, Dan! Sounds promising. I might give it a shot in the near future.

Yeah, BC183L are E-C-B as well.

    Sandspur (stupid question?)

I second this. Breadboarding has completely changed my understanding of these circuits. With fuzz faces specifically, swapping transistors out and understanding how the hFE and leakage of Q1 affects Q2 and vice versa is fascinating. It's a seesaw.

    Sandspur (stupid question?)

This doesn't directly apply to the Sandspur (or Sunflower) boards as they are, because the original Analogman circuit has the bias trimmer on Q2's collector, but one thing I found to be very effective when it comes to biasing a Fuzz Face without changing the expected end result too much is to...

    Question

Cool, just let me know! I may be able to help with the parts too, as I sourced them too when I got the boards. Shoot me a DM and we'll figure it out.

    Question

I got a couple boards from them I'm probably not going to build, the Cardinal tremolo v2 and the Multiplex Jr delay. Happy to pass them along if you're interested.

Germanium transistors - what do I do?

That's very high leakage for a Rangemaster, but worth a try. And I second what folks said about fuzz faces, my favorite sounding fuzz faces, including several I breadboarded and or built, were all low hFE Germanium transistors. MT current favorite, which I'm gonna put inside a Dunlop round...

    Low gain J201

Maybe use them in buffer stages? Not an expert, so I'm not sure that's actually a good idea, just throwing it out there.

Recommendations for a first time build project

Mach 1 is a great option, IMO. Fairly easy build, sounds great.
