Check the data sheets for forward voltage. The lower ones like the BAT will compress and clip the most, with slight volume loss. You dirty rat uses those.

Just for the control look of them. The 6 band eq can surgically eq things better probably. If that's what you need.

I've had plug jacks do the same thing for no apparent reason that I've had to swap out of pedals. Something could be faulty

Buffers help sometimes to put back the treble in a long chain of cables. Try a buffered pedal before and/or after it too

Was the first clip with one cable only? Cables have impedance too. Also bad connections can also degrade the signal. Check the cables each too.

Connect the base and collector. That will become the cathode and emitter becomes the anode.

Don't let the name fool you. Treble boosters add hair and just cut unnecessary low end in a band mix. You can change the input cap to add more bass back in. The really low gain transistors can be used as a ge diode.
