    IN34A spec

The D9 series are all quite similar and are good substitutes for 1N34A as clipping diodes. The D2 series are similar to the D9 series and have a slightly higher Vf. The D18 has an even higher Vf and much lower reverse current leakage; I really like those as the diode in Tone Bender Mk...

    IN34A spec

The 25v, 40mA spec is probably the maximum that the diode can handle, not the test specs. The .28-.29v that Small Bear measured was probably measured at 1mA, which is the test current for many multimeters. If your tester tests at 5mA, which is not unusual for testers like yours, then a Vf of...

    IN34A spec

It does somewhat. As the temperature gets hotter, the diode's Vf increases. So you get slightly less clipping and compression as the temperature goes up. It's not nearly as drastic a change as a fuzz face, where the temperature change shifts the bias of the entire circuit.

That diode looks like a germanium diode. The Vf figure that Small Bear lists is the Vf for that diode at a specific current and temperature. If you're measuring the diode at a higher current and/or a higher temperature than Small Bear, then the Vf that you measure will be higher.

What did you plan on building with them? For lots of circuits (Klon, Distortion+, Super Fuzz, etc.), schottky diodes make excellent substitutes for germanium diodes.

Both of those look like fakes. Real germanium diodes look like this: The ones in your pictures look like Schottky diodes.

    searching for components

I don’t want to sound harsh, but did you actually try searching Tayda, Stompbox Parts, or any of the other vendors that people recommended? I just went to Tayda and entered the search term “1uf” into the search bar. I hit enter and had no trouble finding plenty of 1uF electrolytic capacitors for...

    searching for components

I'd also be happy to help. There are quite a few of us who have offered to help, but in order for us to help we need to know what specific parts you cannot find, @redclover7!.

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

Or whether there will even be any tariffs. There are several pending cases seeking to enjoin the tariffs. One of the stronger cases has a hearing tomorrow morning on the plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgment and a preliminary injunction. Depending on how that goes, the “Liberation Day” tariffs...

    Buying Diodes on Ebay

The seller in your screenshot, Sovcom/Alexer1/Oleg is a very reliable source; you're not getting fakes if you buy from him. I've bought a lot of parts from him and they are always exactly as advertised. As a general rule, if you're buying NOS Soviet germanium diodes, then you're probably not...

Uni-Vibe and Surprise Preamp (AionFX Straylight)

That is a gorgeous build! The decal on top of the polished metal looks incredible. Really great work here, Mike.

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

My last shipment of boards arrived today after making it through customs on April 30. This order cost me $14 including shipping; the same order today would cost $52. I've got enough boards to keep me entertained for a while, so I'll be sitting on the sidelines until things sort themselves out.

Relay Bypass – do I really need one?

Did you read the post above mine? Other people have replied to this thread besides you. If those are the prices that you’re seeing, I’d recommend trying online retailers. You can get the same or comparable switches for a fraction of the cost. That’s a nice luxury to have. For those of us who...

Relay Bypass – do I really need one?

[With the caveat that the cost analysis predates the recent tariff nonsense] Relay switching isn’t meaningfully more expensive than 3PDT switching if you are careful with your parts sourcing. I used JLCPCB to assemble my small relay bypass boards, with the exception of the ATTINY13A...

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

I don’t know about protests (the almost never have any actual impact and when they do have an impact half the time it’s the opposite of what the protesters want), but there are at least three serious lawsuits that are working their way through the courts—V.O.S. Selections v. Trump, Princess...

    Jlcpcb and tariffs

This really isn’t comparable with JLCPCB or any of the other Chinese PCB fabricators. A few months ago I decided to build a clone of the Mountainking Megalith, so I whipped up a PCB and had JLCPCB fabricate it, which cost $3.71 including shipping. The entire build cost just under $30, including...

    SOLVED Marigold fuzz weirdness

This is indeed a thing. The Tone Bender Mk. III/IV family tone control is backwards compared to a Big Muff and most other drive pedals. If you want, you can swap lug 1 and lug 3 on the tone control and it will work in the opposite direction. It’s possible that your germanium transistor might...
