Wow that really is a fuzz face circuit, sandwiched in between (what I assume is) two buffer circuits. What makes this schematic work when generally FFs apparently sound bad after buffers? Does the second buffer somehow negate this?

Got it going. It was bad tracking pot. Replaced it with a new one and it works well.
