    Solder thoughts

Good point, I didn’t really think about people running higher temps, I leave my soldering iron at 350c / 662f for everything and it does well even on pots. Just checked my iron and apparently it can go all the way up to 480c / 896f!

    Solder thoughts

The good news is lead doesn’t vaporise until 732F so as long as we wash our hands it should just be the flux fumes we have to worry about.

    Solder thoughts

I always wash my hands after soldering, mainly because I hate having dirty hands and that flux residue is really annoying. I should probably look into some fume extraction, I’m betting holding my breath when soldering probably isn’t good enough. I have a 1lb roll of kester 63/37 I bought a...

    LM308 and OP07 - the plot thickens

I remember noticing something similar to this back in college. One my my roommates got a pod XT and when he played it, I thought it sounded really good. Then I tried and it felt and sounded weird, kind of had a ‘rubber band’ feeling, which later I realised was a bit of perceptible latency with...

Wondering if using flux on our usual pcbs (Aion's, Lectric FX, PPCB, etc.) is really necessary ?

That might depend on the composition of the flux and what sort of environment it’s in. If the flux stays soft and gummy, or if it gets soft and gummy when warm (and your pcb is in a tube amp or something that gets warm), then it could absorb contaminants in the environment that eventually become...

Wondering if using flux on our usual pcbs (Aion's, Lectric FX, PPCB, etc.) is really necessary ?

I have a little pot of flux that I dip wire ends into, makes tinning them easier and quicker. That’s the only time I use flux. What is already in the solder is enough for pcb soldering, pot and switch lugs, etc. Whenever I have to desolder something I just add fresh solder first, then suck it...

    Storage Questions

Resistor storage is the bane of my existence. I’m jealous of the SMD guys who have 100 of every value in a notebook.

How bad are they really? Talk me out of PCB Guitar Mania

I have a pcb for the sunn beta lead, I bought it ages ago but never got around to building it. I’m sure my doom phase will come back at some point and I’ll make it. I’m not sure which version I have but I assume version 1, as there are traces on the board where the build docs say to cut. I did...

    Isosceles opamp swap? Opa2134?

Any 741 will work fine, my original tc integrated pre has a ua741 in it.

    PCB Pots Tricks

I’ve used little sections of tagboard on these pcb pin pots before to attach solid core wire but it was more trouble than it’s worth, so now I just buy whichever pots are available and solder some solid core wire to the pins, like above. Never had a failure but also I’m not selling them nor...

You did it all for the Mojo! Post your Mojo pictures!

I wedged a metal can ua308 into this sunn life / rat clone. The metal can surely adds more mojo than a dip8 lm308 would. In this pine esquire I made with a single p90, I went with original esquire wiring, and I used some mustard caps I found on eBay. Excuse the pcb pin tone pot, a 250k...

Tubes 101 - Intro to Tube Preamp Design

great primer on how tube circuits work. With this info you can pretty much analyse how all tube amps work since they’re all just variations on this theme. Just add more or less stages, more or less interstage filtering, different component values, etc. Now we can look at the JCM800 preamp and...

    Tayda Went Ghetto On Me

That’s how my resistors came back in the day when I got them from maplin. There was also usually corrosion on the legs, and sometimes the wrong value.

    Extreme scream machine

Ah cool an od808x. I bought one a couple years ago since I kept reading reviews about how it was a more ‘metal’ tubescreamer, lots of people claiming big differences… apart from the high end and tone knob operation it just sounds like a ts to me. It’s brighter though, and can’t get as smooth...

    Best way to desolder pots?

I’ve been saved by my own cheapness in this regard before, a lot of my pedals I just bought the cheaper solder lug pots and soldered solid core wire to them for pcb mount, so they’re only a quick snip away from salvage.

    Neural Amp Modeler?

I saw this a few months ago, the guy doing it posted it on tgp. Looks very cool, interesting that a guy who does machine learning stuff outdid kemper and neural, who’ve made big business (relatively speaking at least) doing tonematching for years. This sort of stuff looks like it will probably...

Reducing gain on fixed gain op amp (Integral Preamp / TC Integrated Pre)

No, I’ve been on a tubescreamer kick for a while now so I kind of abandoned the idea. I don’t recall what the result of the R6 adjustment above was but I’m pretty sure I tried it.

    Better BASS Guitar FUZZ?

Latepass but I’ve only just now been looking into this widow maker of a pedal attached to a piece of plywood… is that tube stage worth adding? Does it add anything that a clean boost before or after just the muff portion can’t?
