SOLVED Thermionic - GAIN seems wide open?

Alright I measured the pot (which I thought would give me wacky values if I measured on-board, should've just done it earlier). All signs and measurements pointed to a broken pot. I've been using these pots without pins or solder lugs, so I was soldering my wires into the thru-holes instead of...

SOLVED Thermionic - GAIN seems wide open?

With the gain knob in both positions I have infinite resistance between the pins. @brightlight I've tried it with the gain all the way down. The trim pot changes the sound, but the knob does not. @DailyDovetails I do the same, though my capacitance checking tool is the cheapest one on amazon...

SOLVED Thermionic - GAIN seems wide open?

Ah man, thanks for the tip, good to know. I always figured if the ohms are right, the part must work. I'll have to make a new special order, none of my packs had 39k in them. Is it just gain stages that are finicky like that? Or is there a time/place where an improvised resistor/cap isn't going...

SOLVED Thermionic - GAIN seems wide open?

Yup, that's a series 39k resistor, and I also had to improvise a 120pf parallel cap for C12 (@chris.knudson). I used a A50K for volume, it's what the most recent build docs say. B1M for gain, there's just no real change in clipping when I adjust the pot, only the trimmer has any effect on gain.

SOLVED Thermionic - GAIN seems wide open?

Hi all, my Thermionic Distortion build's GAIN knob doesn't seem to be working. The trim pot works to modify the gain, but when I use the knob there seems to be no effect when I turn. It's almost as if it's stuck maxed out, because the volume knob is very very sensitive. Things I've tried...

    El Sol mod for Bass

Thank you Sturdag, I've never delved too deeply into the datasheet, but I will now! I've seen cap mods for bass on other pedals but haven't been too confident about trying to transpose those into this circuit. Having it on the datasheet plain and simple will make it easy hopefully. Used a 1M for...

    El Sol mod for Bass

I made an El Sol for my bass player, and gave it the Gain mod, to try to make it a little more useable on his board. It's still a little thin sounding, like it needs some more bass presence/resonance. I was wondering if I could change a capacitor value to allow for more of that full bass, that...

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

Thanks for the help you all. Got it all re-soldered correctly and the thing CRANKS! Bypass mode works well too. I burnt (barely) the casing of another 10uf in the process though. How sensitive are the electrolytic caps to heat? It seems to still be sounding good, until I get over 80% on the...

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

....DOH! I'm headed out for the weekend but when I get back I'll probably be marking this one SOLVED

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

OK, got it thanks. LM386: 1-1.3v.....8-1.3v 2-0v........7-4.6v 3-0v........6-9.1v 4-0v........5-4.4v 386D: 1-1.3v.....8-1.3v 2-0v........7-4.5v 3-.6v........6-9.1v 4-0v........5-3.9v Do the values look good? There's some discrepancies in there but mostly on par with each other.

Haha yup, just wasn't in the mood to be dealing with more headache than necessary at that point

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

Awesome, thank you. LED turned out to be bad, I tried another one and it lit right up, tried the first one again both ways and it was a dud. Everything checks out with continuities, and I have 9.11V + 8~ish on each, if I'm doing the right pins (Inputs + Vout). I can't seem to find if those are...

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

I'll start with both of those. To check continuity through the board, you mean to make sure that the cap is connected to the IC through the board, etc? Nic, I know it looks like it's bridged i the pic but there's no continuity there, I just poked it out of the way a little more. Switch is wired...

SOLVED El Sol - crazy noise!

Hi all, Like a lot of us I'm trying the El Sol for my first build. Like a LOT of us on the internet, I ran into a couple crazy noise issues, and I haven't really found them actually resolved anywhere on the internet. I'm also hoping to clean this up a lot because I'm hoping to build another...
