General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Thanks for sharing! Let us know how the other vactrols go? I realized the ones I had weren't the VTL5C4 after all, but were the VTL5C3, so I haven't tried them. I'm pretty satisfied with how things turned out with the KE-10720 LDR and LED combo; good compression with a bit of character and...

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Awesome, thanks for the heads up - I'm definitely going to give that a shot then.

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Did you just drop two VTL5C4 into this pcb and that's it? No other changes? I've used the VTL5C4 on madbean's clone of the Diamond Comp and loved it, built a couple more of those clones "just in case", ha. I still have a few VTL5C4 vactrols lying around and I have another pcb for the Tso...

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Curious for the sake of learning, you don't have to reveal your secret sauce on this circuit, but when you say you don't like some of the design choices, can you explain what they were and why you didn't like them? Compressors are a mystery to me in terms of circuit design; all I understand...

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Hi Sebastian, I did change the GL5516 I got from Amazon out for KE-10720 LDRs from Tayda, that and the trimmers lowering the resistance to the LEDs seems to have done the trick. The pedal is compressing, but if you're comparing it to most other compressors the effect is still subtle. I thought...

SOLVED Boneyard Delegate not doing much compressing

Hey man I’m curious where you got your LDR GL5516 - I built a General Tso recently which is also an optical compressor based on the GL5516 and I am having the exact same problem, it doesn’t seem to be compressing almost at all compared to online demos. I measured my LDRs and got similar dark...

3 effects at once: FV-1 all-in-one vs discrete circuits?

Ok cool, that’s what I was leaning toward as the tremolo would be by far the simplest to make analog out of these three. Much appreciated!

3 effects at once: FV-1 all-in-one vs discrete circuits?

TL;DR If you were designing a chorus/reverb/trem combo pedal with a footswitch for each effect, how would you do it? I’m trying to design a pedal that runs reverb, chorus, and tremolo on three separate foot switches, and wondered if the FV-1 format could do all three at once instead of doing...

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Hey guys, thanks for all the input! Much appreciated. I checked parts and reflowed all my connections, and replaced the LED resistors with trim pots wired as variable resistors. The lights seem to light up better now, although even with the trim pots (2k) shunting to ground they don't get...

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Yup, tried that first. I just tried lower resistors too, but it was no better, the LEDs very faintly glimmer even with a straight jumper to ground. I’ve built some other LED/lamp + LDR based pedals, tremolos and univibes, and they got a good bit brighter than these LEDs will. Not sure what’s up.

General Tso Not Compressing / LEDs too Dim

Hey gang, just finished a General Tso tonight and everything seems to be working other than the fact that the LEDs associated with the LDR barely engage when playing, so I get no noticeable compression from the circuit. The biggest strum gets a very faint glimmer from them, almost...

Strange problem with Octagon FV-1 build

Hey guys, that worked perfectly! I reflowed legs 16-20 and the pedal is now working perfectly. I was tempted to reflow some more legs cause they don’t all look great, but if it’s working it’s working and I can reflow those other legs down the line if something goes wrong with them. They seem to...

I'll give that a shot! Thanks, any direction is better than none at this point =)

Strange problem with Octagon FV-1 build

Hey gang, I'm having an odd problem with my recent Octagon build. When I first built it the last four effects in the selector switch worked, other than the fact that the harmonic trem seemed weak/off somehow. Fastforward a week or so, and now when I turn the selector knob through all 8 modes...

Cheese Monger: modding for more volume?

Just a heads up, I didn't cut them off completely I bent them up, and in retrospect I should have only bent up pin 6 for soldering and leave pin 7 as is and solder to it, because you need pin 7 connected to the PCB to close the circuit (as I discovered after bending both 6 and 7 up, then having...

    Hydra Questions

Again, major noob here open to being corrected, but as I understand it the FV-1 is the hardware/processor of the circuit and the EEPROM chips contain the program/software that tells the FV-1 what to do with the signal. EEPROM are a form of memory/storage chip, and they contain the algorithms...

    Hydra Questions

I’m an FV-1 noob and recently built my first couple pedals with that chip, including a Hydra about a week back. Awesome pedal, highly recommend - I’m new to pedals but have been soldering in amps for years, and I’d recommend watching some videos on surface mount soldering techniques first. It’s...

Cheese Monger: modding for more volume?

The Aion modification to the second tl072 section worked like a charm! I have a bunch of tl072 chips lying around so I figured I’d risk soldering the alterations straight to the legs. Not my brightest idea perhaps, but not my dumbest either. Worked well though, and the pedal sounds exactly the...

Cheese Monger: modding for more volume?

Awesome, this is perfect info guys I really appreciate it! I'll probably try that output-buffer-to-boost conversion thing first as it's the simplest/quickest looking solution, but it's nice to know I can just tack on a recovery/boost stage like that onto (almost?) any circuit. I'm coming from...

Cheese Monger: modding for more volume?

Hey gang, first time poster here, and rather new to building in general. I recently finished a Cheese Monger and absolutely love the sound and feel, but with the volume dimed I'm riiiight around unity, and depending on how I've got the tone set up, even with the volume maxed it can even seem...
