Abider (JRD "The Dude")

I've been sitting on this board for at least 3 years and finally got around to building it.

The Abider is a well known Dumble ODS style pedal. In my mind that always says "ahhh it's another Zen drive variant".

Well, this isn't. And given JRD's penchant for squeezing out new pedals based on the same schematic over and over, the Abider is a refreshing change.

Allegedly, the Dude was voiced to match a particular Dumble owned by Keith Urban.
The circuit has some YATS-like blocks but multiple gain stages with both soft and hard clippers.

There are a few mods floating around for this pedal but I didn't do any of them and built this stock. To my ears, it sounds more like one of the later higher gain Dumbles that used EL34's. It's got a more Marshall-like tone to it than most other ODS-style pedals.
Yet at the same time, it does indeed tonally belong in the category of overdrives like the Zen Drive.

This is an older project but still a highly recommended build for a more aggressive Dumble-esque overdrive.

The Dude is probably my favorite JRockett pedal, it does sound really dang good.

With that said, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's just an ODR-1 and Blue Note in series. 🤣

Interesting, I built the Blue Note (and the Majestic) off the Animal (Mammal) board. Hmmm, I guess I need to do a built report on those:)

@Robert - looking at the schematic, is that really how VREF is wired? That unused opamp just begging to be put to good use, and he almost used it for a Vref buffer. Almost.

Isn’t there another JRocket design that has an unused opamp with one of the inputs left floating?

Lots of them! The Animal, Blue Note, Majestic, and Calibre 45 are all the same basic circuit but with varying levels of gain. In some they connect the second half of the opamp to something and in others it was too hard apparently.

The advantage of building all of these on the PPCB Mammal (JRD Animal) board is that they'll all share the additional gain and clipping via the toggle. Out of all of them though, I like the Mammal, which is an excellent sounding MIAB and the Majestic, which has some softer clipping from the Ge clippers.
