People who use transfer paper with laser printers: Please help!

I cannot figure out what i'm doing wrong here.

first of all, im using blue press n peel paper from ebay:

My first two pedals came out fine, it took 2 or 3 attempts each but had 2-3 pretty large blobs where it didnt stick. aside from that, they were fine. for these, i used a cheap iron i got from amazon which had a relatively flat plate but all of them have a 30 second shutoff, so i couldnt set it down flat for any real amount of time, i had to immediately and constantly slide the iron around and hope not to smear anything. I could never get it perfect but the results were actually better than what im getting ever since

after this I was trying to eliminate ANY blobs/little spots which the transfer did not stick to, so the first thing i did was to buy a heavier iron which i thought had a 10 minute auto shutoff since I couldnt find one without. it turns out, that was only when it was sitting in a vertical position, and it still had a 30 second shutoff when placed face down. this pedal wasn't any better and actually had worse results:

(and it turns out that caustic soda eats right through sharpie marker and posca paint marker, but using an exacto knife to clean up missing white parts post-transfer does work relatively well)

so this morning i got my Heating Plate. I first tried setting it to 275 degrees, taping the transfer on two sides (either top and bottom or left and right) with Kapton heat resistant tape, placing it down on the transfer for 15 seconds, removing it, flattening the transfer paper with another pedal enclosure or a flat piece of wood, then sitting the heating plate back on it for about 90 seconds while applying force. next i tried just setting it to 355 degrees and placing it down on the transfer for 110 seconds without moving it at all, and applying some downward force while holding it completely still. this produced worse results than the first iron i had. the one with paper towel next to it was when i attempted to lay a folded paper towel flat over the pedal and under the heating plate to make it more even as suggested by some online. that seemed to make it worse in the center probably:

i put the heat resistant pad that came with the heating plate under the pedal, but for some attempts, i tried using a wooden block like i used to with the old iron. couldn't tell which method is better there. the heating plate has the ability to set an exact temperature and even has a timer. and it doesn't have a terrible auto shutoff feature. it can go 13 minutes without shutting off. it also allegedly distributes the temperature across the entire ceramic heating plate evenly. but it is $100. so the fact that it didn't work much better is disappointing

even with waiting for it to cool before carefully peeling, or even once trying to dump cold water on it immediately, the center came off completely (the Grind pedal design was where i tried that). and on these last attempts, I used two different pedal enclosures.

for the record , i sand very hard, maybe too hard. i know shiny is suggested, so i used to go from 230 to 400 grit to sometimes even 1000 or 1500, but now I'm going only to 400 grit then stopping because apparently super shiny mirror finish isn't great for sticking transfer. i also use water to rinse it off after sanding, sometimes a little wet sanding, then acetone, wipe it down, sometimes a steel wool wipe, then rinse with water again. i am very careful not to touch the top at all after cleaning. all of these attempts shown in this post have been very well sanded, acetone scrubbed, cleaned, and not touched with fingers after cleaning

one thing i haven't tried is pre-heating the enclosure but that seems tough. maybe worth a shot though.

I would really like to hear what your process is, which heating element you use, how long, do you move it or leave it still, which paper do you use, etc.

What i really want to narrow down is:
1. is the best method, to lay the iron at its highest temp down on the transfer paper for a few minutes, then lift it and start running it across the transfer for like 5 more minutes? because thats the general advice, but i think blue transfer paper is only supposed to take like a minute or two at 350 degrees
2. does more heat for longer make it worse and potentially smudge?
3. do i just need to leave the heating plate on longer? the max time ive had this heating plate on these is just under 2 minutes, stationary, never moving. maybe i should kind of run it across the pedal to smooth it out after a little while of sitting stationary
4. whats the best heating tool for this
5. whats the best paper
6. how do you sand your pedals pre-transfer
7. is there a better type of paper to be using with laser printers for this purpose

Moving onto the Isoscles today then the solo Dallas storm clone after that

I already have the isosceles/grind etched and a first draft design of the “obscura” which is what I’ll call the solo Dallas storm limiter, but I wouldn’t mind settling on a less time consuming method for artwork with a higher success rate
 
thank you, yeah i havent used the dremel on any of these but i have ben over-sanding post-spray paint. i need to work on getting the right grit and process

i think they look pretty good together on my diy fuzz secondary board

I have to say: Ungula through Isosceles (tc mode with bass and treble boosted, level cranked), through the Broughton resonant (Referee) eq, especially when Ungula is pushed by the demonfx precision drive, is unreal

Even without precision drive and the Broughton resonant eq, it’s unbelievable. It eliminates the ultrasonic low frequencies that cause mud/flub and bumps the more audible 100-200hz range

Then the referee eq adds a very nice almost cab sim shaping to the whole thing

I have all my compressors and graphic eq after those, but for the main voice, these are a perfect combo. Highly recommended

Since chatgpt is great at making the initial design but awful at placing things with exact dimensions and relative position on an image, I had claude fable build me an app that allows me to import the chat gpt art

i just tell chatgpt to make me whatever image in whatever style i want with these parameters:
920×1710px, representing a 64.09mm × 119.27mm pedal face. Keep the canvas at exactly 920×1710px Draw artwork on a canvas EXACTLY 64mm wide × 119mm tall (tall narrow rectangle, ratio ~1.86). Pure black and white only, #000000 and #ffffff — no gray, no gradients, no transparency. White = will be etched, black = stays raised metal. Output a high-resolution PNG, at least 1500 × 2800 px.

then I go to pedalpcb site, open build guide, click "print" from chrome, select "save as pdf" instead of choosing a printer, choose custom page, and only select the last page with the drill template

I can now open my EtchForge app, import the saved png image from gpt, import the drill template

(that screenshot was grabbed before i perfectly aligned the image. that feature is also better now)

I click my "arm one-click align" button, then click the top left corner of my gpt artwork, and the drill template snaps to the artwork image

then i generate however many drill holes and which type of hole (led, pot, footswitch, toggle, etc)

i manually nudge them with the arrow keys to make sure they're perfectly positioned

then i generate my labels, type the text, choose font and style, then i can either print from here or export and print from another program, but this does allow you to pull in multiple images so you can fit 4 different etch transfer designs on one sheet of transfer paper

it even shows you a preview of the mounted hardware

hopefully i can perfect it because Fable isnt free anymore (which is why i had it make this for me on the last free day) and i find this extremely helpful for generating fully prepared etch transfers with proper drill hole alignment

with that being said, i think im gonna try to transition over to waterslide decals if they turn out decent on my initial attempts

Much less prep and dirty work, potentially more waiting around, but that can be mitigated with preparation and timing out your steps in the build process

As an impatient person, I think I’ll be able to manage

The designs have to be much more accurately for this too, which is tough


I got blobs of varnish dripped on the decal, I tore the decal when tightening the foot switch nut, the only prep I did on the enclosure was cleaning it off with isopropyl alcohol. So next time should be better if I can figure out how to better prep the enclosure (clear coat layer before decal maybe) and how to stick/dry the decal on better

I really need tips on how to design art that’s aligned to the drill holes and knobs for these. Ai cannot do it well at all

I saw some assets for affinity designer (which I’ve never used) for different knob types on this forum, which might help with alignment, but I’m not sure exactly how people do it

If anyone has any tips of making pedal art with perfectly aligned labels and outer knob elements, I’d be very grateful for those

Could always use a deburr tool to widen the right side of the hole and use a washer to cover it up.
I wonder if I have a washer that wide

It’s a good idea but I’m having a tough time picturing it. And the nut that clamps down on the metal led bezel post has to have something to secure itself to. I just can’t really imagine what you’re describing fully
 
@anevilspar7an Just to clarify, you’re using a swivel/rotating deburr tool, like this, for this job?


I have a dremel but I barely know how to use it at all and I’d be afraid that I’d dig in too far with it. Which is why I like the idea of a burr tool, but I wanted to make sure this is what you use for this exact issue
