Any synth users out there?

Been on a bit of a hiatus from building building these days (just realized the last thing I actually finished up build-wise was in December of 2025 ) but have still been tinkering in one way or another. I've found myself getting really into synths and drum machines and sequencers and the like, which feels like an inevitability after deep diving into pedals and effects for the last few years. After getting fed up with having to plug and unplug synths one at a time if I wanted to play them, I decided to clear off my building desk and turn it into a little synth playground/workstation. It's not much, but it's a fun little corner to get lost in for a while. The mixer has been cool to mess around with too, especially since I can use the aux ins/outs to get some pedals going with different pieces of gear. There's also a Synth Library out here in Portland that lets members check out gear for three weeks at a time, so I've been having a lot of fun messing around with different devices and skiffs and them recording those and sampling them with the Digitakt. I'm tempted by modular stuff as well, but haven't quite decided if I want to go all out on that route or not, so time will tell.

Anyways, I just thought it would be cool to share my setup and see what other people are working with! I'd also love to hear what other people are doing, open up discussion about different synths that we're excited about, etc etc.

It's a lot more attractive than the synth table I've got 😅 Mine's a plastic folding craft table. I've been eyeing more synths, but some priorities have changed. I did get a Behringer MS-5 not long ago, which is quite a cool synth, and zero chance I'd ever get an SH-5 without a time machine. Was reeeeally looking at a Korg Opsix, because I never dug into the DX7 IIFD I had back in college like I could have, and the controls are very well done it seems. There's a Prologue 16 not too far from me on classifieds, but I don't think I'll ever make use of it to its potential …or have room.

At one point I had quite a collection, and I ""picked"" the worst time to divest it all, but the recession put me at basically zero : / only one bit of gear I'd like back from that era was the SQ|80. Had some great memories with that one.

edit: that Behringer D has the most unstable tuning, but you can't beat that filter…

Gear-wise I’m always the most interested in what I can scrounge up cheap and used. Eurorack is cool but the money is bonkers.

If you can commit the space, 19” gear is a cool thing to get into cost wise.

The only new thing I’ve had my eye on is the new little Akai Sample that just came out.

That is a great setup. Microkorg, HD24, and the Masterlink- Those were some of my faves that I used all the time. Don’t have ‘em anymore though.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a Model D but have heard mixed reviews, instability being one of the issues that seems to keep popping up for it. Looks like a fun pair there though!!

Damn, I would love more space like this. Some great stuff there! And yea, the cost of entry to eurorack stuff feels pretty steep. I managed to find a little Cre8Audio powered case for $130 on FB Marketplace, so I'll probably build something around that but if I hadn't found that I probably would still be holding off on modular for the time being. Just can't seem to justify dropping like $500 for a case alone just yet.

This looks fun as hell, and I love the wrapping on it
Yes, tons of fun. Back in the day, synthesizers.com had an entry-level package. $100/month for 1 year. At month three, they sent the chassis, power supply, and an oscillator module. Then each month, you would get one more module. It was flexible, I was in college on a tight budget, and they let me pause a few times, so it took me a year and a half. Then over the years I filled it up.

The art is acrylic paint that was done by a friend.

Microkorg, HD24, and the Masterlink
All to justify my irrational anti-DAW stance 🤣

That’s awesome. Seems like it can be done more reasonably if you’re willing to give it some thought and maybe a little DIY. The couple folks I know who have done it went completely nuts, so my perspective is a little skewed.

@mybud has posted some cool DIY synth projects, and I think some of it was eurorack.

I love synths, but I’m definitely a novice compared to most. My synth rig:
  1. Moog Minitaur (my first synth)
  2. KMI 12 step midi controller
  3. Behringer Model D
  4. Korg ARP Odessey rev 1 module
  5. Arturia Keylab 61 mk1 midi controller
  6. A pair of Stylophones
I’d love to get my hands on a dawless polysynth setup of some sort too.
My white whale that I’ve been after for a decade is a reasonably priced Roland PK-5A or PK-6 midi controller— had two different dud PK-5As that I’ve bought and had to return over the years— one had a cracked frame that was shoddily welded together and not disclosed, and the other had extensive damage from battery leakage and water damage.

I mean, it's loads of fun, and a bass factory, but there's a reason they kept the A440 switch beyond authenticity :ROFLMAO: . And for less than 1/10th the price of a reissue Model D, not a bad investment. Could probably find a pre-owned one, too.

I like framing them as synth “users” instead of “players”, it makes sense in the addict sense. 😂
You’re not wrong. I have one friend that is not a musician in any way, but he’s amassed an enormous modular rig. He takes a more scientific approach and likes to create audio representations of mathematical concepts.

Part of why I love synthesizers is this math/music bridge. We can learn more about what’s on each other’s side of the bridge through a really expensive hobby.

Just sayin cause my job is working with vulnerable people. 😂

You guys have some serious gear! I only have a JP08 and a sequencer which I honestly rarely use and then software synths all the way. I haven’t worked on integrating my hardware setup with my DAW setup (which is my primary one).

Anti-DAW as well.

This got on my radar I hate to waste 10 euro cassettes on 15min recordings. 😅
8 tracker (stereo audio and midi). Too expensive for impulse buy though.
