Could ESD really blow a chip up like that where it blows apart?

That sort of thing would be indirect rather than an instant explosion when you touch the IC...

ESD could cause internal damage that produces excess heat and leads to that sort of failure.
 
I was gonna say exploding ICs because of direct ESD would be too much fun, wear some wool socks to your job at TI just to see how fast you could get canned.
 
Hey everyone, this is my pedal. You guys are right I fried the chip with the wall wart (now I know not all pedals are 9v). Very stupid mistake, thanks to Robert for sending me a new IC chip for free. I'm happy to send over payment for the chip, this was my fault. Thanks also to Zach and Tim for their help. Pedal is working fine now, I just needed to adjust the bias and gate.

is there anything else i should check that i could have fried?
If everything appears to be functioning as it should I’d think your safe. Seems odd that the regulator is fine but the chip after it blew. But I don’t have much experience with the effects of wrong ps.
