So, I thought it might be a good idea to document, regardless of how long it’s going to take me, the development, design and eventual building of my 6K6 Hiwatt amp.
The goal is to graft a 70s DR-xxx Preamp onto a the 6K6 poweramp from the Wattkin’s Push Pull forum. I’ll be using a tube rectifier.
It will be the Linked Input variety and I’m only planning on a single input. Not sure whether I’m going to do the traditional resistor mixing stage or use the unused triode to do the mixing there.
The plan is to design and have manufactured a set of 2 boards, Preamp and poweramp, so that much of the classic Hiwatt “geography” can be preserved. Transformers will be from Edcor so that’s probably the first item I’ll order, as they have leads times up to 20 weeks at the moment. My enclosure is also a special order from AES. It’s a 14x10x3 aluminum Hammond box.
I’m going to build a head cab to match my handmade speaker cab and put a Hiwatt badge on it. Also, I’ll have custom Hiwatt style Face and backplates.
My layout is a work in progress but here it is:
