Bootleg overdrive sounds splatty

Just built the Bootleg Overdrive and it sounds kind of splatty, especially when I dig in with my pick, also it doesn't seem to get very loud, the volume control doesn't do much past noon. Is this how it's supposed to be? Anybody else feel this way about theirs? I'll get pics up somehow. I used a 470k,33k,7.5k to make a 510k resistor that came out to 510.5k

If your transistor is socketed you could have a marginal connection on one or more pins. Try removing the transistor and tinning the legs with solder to make them a bit bigger and see if you get any audible improvement when you put it back in the socket.

Okay, this interests me because the socket on the right felt a bit loose when I put the transistor in
