Boutique Pedal Manufacturers Are Feeling the Tariff Pinch

So an extra 10% tarrifs because us over here have this wild idea that you can’t just invade places and take other peoples land.

So I guess we protect ourselves with tarriffs going the other way …

So if I want any PPCB boards I should order them now before it gets too crazy.


I grew up being taught our monarchy was mad and a unwritten constitution and unelected upper house was stupid compared, to a wonderful written constitution with all its well thought out checks and balances and division between the branches of government. I can’t get my head around it - Turns out it either was a mirage of a good system or the citizens disnt actually care about it.
 
We are born in an age of a constitutional democracy being a matter of course. Looking at history there is no reason to think a democracy can't turn into an absolute democracy. I quote Meryl Streep: The winner takes it all.

The EU doesnt wants tariffs in return. (Edit: they are preparing tariffs in return) But if so I guess even an 100% tariff would stop me buying PPCB's.

And better quality. Didn't we have a thread here a few weeks ago that showed two pedal housing prototypes and the chinese one was made faster, cheaper and better even after the tariffs? I have a amp chassis made and powder coated by JLC. 15€. And it's on point. Beat that.

Yup, that was also my post lol

The chinese manufacturers I've been working with have always provided excellent quality in a shorter amount of time and provided excellent customer service as well.
 
Almost a year after I suspended shipping to the US due to tariffs, I finally gave in and went through the bureucracy of having my products USMCA-certified (or CUSMA as we call it in Canada). It took all of 15 minutes or so, all online. I also have to label my stuff Made in Canada (which is legit, since they all need significant work done in Canada, easily accounting for more than 50% of their value, as the last production steps). I had procrastinated because I didn't want to go through through it all, only to find out the next day that the whole USMCA is out. We just never know what new bullshit we wake up to every day anymore...
 
Nice! Been there, liked it. Shediac. Very nice beach (you can even go in the ocean without running into an iceberg for maybe a month a year 🤪). Best chowder I've ever had.
 
Lately on Instagram I've been seeing small pedal and guitar builders announcing they are going out of business or taking a break, citing tariffs as one of the reasons.
Makes sense but also the market has been saturated for a while and let's be honest, who is doing anything new, especially among all these fuzz makers?
Even without the rising costs, eventually it was going to happen for those who didn't offer anything unique or didn't become established.

I despise tariffs and private equity as much as the next guy but I can't justify shelling out several hundred dollars for a fuzz just because it has exotic components, or several thousand dollars for a Gibson/Fender copy with a different headstock and a cool paint job.

I'm 50 and I don't remember a time when custom or "boutique" products were ever affordable. The only time you'd buy one was when it made sense: a custom suit, a custom bike or a product that just wasn't available elsewhere, and even then it was something only rich people could afford.

I don't know, just ranting this morning.

My major innovation in the market, and the reason I attribute my success to, is my revolutionary marketing scheme. A program I like to call "low expectations".

1) Sales can never dip if you never had any to begin with.

2) your latest beep boop machine is cool and all, but you know where the real money's at? Stand up comedy. I hear they have a great union.

3) It isn't a crime to murder your rivals so long as you do so while wearing the garb of an activist investor.

Tariffs are just the convenient reason to close a non-profitable business in an abysmal market.

While tariffs as executed are pretty crappy, it’s also a way to deflect failure.

The last 5 years was a real shitty time to start selling pedals and it certainly was not helped by recent market conditions.

100% - I think there was a bit of a boom covid era of just regular people making and selling stuff too, not like electrical genius, or anyone doing anything super exciting - just moving growing outside the original diy scene armed with KIcad and instagram... and pedals that are okish.
And then JLCPCB prices go up, Tayda go up, the Canadians stop buying your tubescreamer variant and JHS can launch a new pedal every month and you're still talking about your rare diodes or something and at some point in your hustle you realise there's no money in it, and nobody cares
