Built mostly stock, the only mods being -
  • R5 is 100r to saturate the chip a teensy bit more
  • C12 is 27p to accommodate the chip swap
  • Chip is an LM308 from Polida (fake? 🤷🏻 sounds good, either way)
  • Drive is increased to 100k
  • Toggle switch added to swap the stock silicon's for red LEDs or no clippers
I've built this one a few times, but this is the first I've performed any tweaks on. Stock, it's got a bit too much of that Tube Screamery clean bleed that doesn't agree with my preferred clean amp sounds, but it does sound great and has a fairly large dynamic range.
The Hi and Lo controls interact well, and allow for everything from scoopy tinnitus to muddy wood. Hard to get any settings here to sound bad

Still not a huge fan of the silicon clippers in the feedback loop, but reducing R5 does help reduce the clean bleed a bit. This mode sounds anemic compared to the others, but is great for big chords and probably more respectable music than I care to play

The LEDs sound awesome- huge, dynamic, defined, and pushes the chip just a bit harder which is wonderful in my opinion

No clipping diodes is my favorite setting, going from a significantly warmer Clean Rat type of low gain OD up to slightly more saggy version of the fuzztortion that I love about the Rat

All said, I dig this circuit quite a bit.

Fab! And I like the square LEDs - where did you find them?? FWIW when I built one of these ages ago I used two pairs of 1N4148s because just one pair as clipping diodes sounded a bit naff, as you suggest.

Is green tape the new white washer?
