building a big "dummy box" SCHMORG

@dawson — Have you ever calculated the weight savings of the Schmörgasboard?

I know the rails you 3D-print and other fasteners etc will add back some of the weight lost from ditching the enclosure-shells, but ...

I would think there would still be an overall weight-savings compared to putting full pedals on a similarly crafted board.

Hey, @Feral Feline!

Yeah, the weight difference is substantial- I haven't done any calculations, but the empty box itself weighs less than a pedal board of comparable size, each effect unit weighs less than its' pants-wearing counterpart, the sleds weigh next to nothing, and on top of all that, all of the would-be 1/4" jacks and cables have been replaced by those tiny connectors.

*Not to worry though, my speaker cabinet still weighs a ton :)

Btw I love this - such a clever approach

The interesting thing I was thinking about this week is the anachronism of foot switches - and if you could use relay switching then the switch could be at the front of a board and the space saved where the effect / plate thing is…
Anyway - slightly different thing!

Firstly, I must bow down to the almighty Schmorg and confess that I am doing my utmost to adapt (read: shamelessly steal 😳) your ideas for an equivalent project for myself (provided my entry-level woodworking skills can come back to me after a long hiatus). But much like rn43x and bechbox before me, I too have tried and thus far failed to find the type of connectors you've been using. Any help or tips you (or anyone else) can give me/us in locating these would be incredibly appreciated.

(Also, I checked out the Bustard Bandcamp and man are you guys good! And in Modesto no less?! Wow...)

Those are called "bullet connectors"

There are lots of options available on Amazon. Connection is easy: crimp on with a solid set of crimpers.

Looks like OP is using open-barrel-type connectors in this build. There are closed barrel, pre-insulated variants as well that tend to be color coded for the size of wire they're intended to be used with. 22awg + red connectors would work perfectly.

I can't say I've ever actually used this style of connector, curious as to how they compare to Spade terminals: those are typically my go-to when I'm wiring up semi-permanent connections at work.

As a personal note: when using color-coded closed barrel connectors I tend to prefer heat shrink or nylon insulators over vinyl.

I'm a big fan of lever nuts as well: wago makes some excellent in-line lever nuts: those only require stripping of the wire before assembly, and don't mangle the conductors like wire nuts do. Great for prototyping builds.

Thanks so much, Stickman! That helped me narrow it down and find quite a few options. I also like the lever nuts idea, especially for daisy chain lines like power or ground. Much food for connectivity thought!

Show us your lever-nuts...
