If you want something that is sort of a TS but also isn't, try this:

It's sort of between a TS and a Timmy/Jan Ray, so it won't sound as flat as a screamer but also still have some screamery mid push.
Plus it's quite adjustable.

Thats on my list to buy for myself actually! I just bought myself a dodgy clone of a jan ray very cheap from a not very reputable effects manufacturer and I'm really surprised at how much I like it. You're totally right, if I had to describe it I'd say halfway between my Tim and a screamer!

Good recs here. Going a little different direction, this one is a great circuit which, IIRC, was described as "the tube screamer for people who hate tube screamers!" Maybe something to consider, maybe not.
