Can anyone remove a SMD chip and solder a new one?

Non pedal question. I have a wireless bike derailleur. I needed to do some work on my bike and I unplugged the derailleur from the battery. This unfortunately fried the DMV8833 chip on the front. Does anybody have access to a SMD hot air desoldering unit and can replace the chip?

I got one of these a while back to try hot air soldering some smd stuff with solder paste.

I've mostly used it for shrinking shrink tube, but it might be worth just getting one to have around.

Do you have access to a hair dryer? Use it on the backside of the board and pop the chip out. Otherwise, I’d invest in a hot air gun shown above.

What I would probably do:
- cut off the part's legs at the very top using an Xacto or utility knife (careful not to put too much pressure and end up cutting into the board)
- pluck what's left of the pins, one by one, with tweezers and an iron. The idea is to do no harm to the PCB.
- clean up (solder wick, alcohol etc).
- hand solder the new part (easier than it may seem, given a small-tip iron, thin solder wire and plenty of flux).

I only use a hot air setup when I really can't avoid it.
