Cleaver sounds fuzzy/distorted

Hey there,
I just built the Cleaver and biased it correctly (9V on each side) the volume knob and the switch work as expected (its getting louder and quiter when turning the knob and one position on the switch has less harmonics than the other), but instead of clean or slightly saturated gain, I get fuzzy distortion. I checked every connection on the pcb with the MM according to the schematic to be sure not to have a cold joint and resoldered every component on the PCB on top of that multiple times.

I have also tried to replace the 2N5458 with 2N5457 (have only these here atm) but the result is more or less the same. Have I overseen something?

What is interesting, is that single notes remain somewhat clean, but when playing entire chords or powerchords it seems like it runs out of headroom and begins to clip/sounding fuzzy. Behaviour is always the same, does not matter how much I turn up or down the volume knob.

Perhaps the IC is broken? But then I would not be able to bias the transistors correctly, right?

Hope somebody has an idea what that could be. Thanks!
