Delay before mods?

A friend brought over one of the original Maxon delays (AD-900) for me to play around with. It’s 12 v and reverse polarity, so the easiest thing was for me to drop it in where I normally have my Effectrode Vibe, (at the start of my mod section).

First off, it’s a great, very simple delay. Not that different sounding, to my ears, than the Seabed. What I can’t get over is how nice having a subtle delay feeding into a chorus, etc. can sound! When I give it back, I think my Seabed is going to be moved to that spot. Anyone else try a delay in that position?

In a word: nope. But the idea is awesome.

I like my chorus early in my chain, generally so I can put it ahead of a MIAB, but I have been experimenting with a delay pre AIAB pedals. Sounds like I will have to try it next time I refresh my board.

I used to use a Maxon AD999. It ran on 9V and I thought it sounded great - I might still have it somewhere. I have lots of delays but use them less and less these days. I always run delay late in the chain, same with chorus (at least I did when I used to use chorus, about 30 years ago!).

I haven’t tried that but I will!

I tore down my pedal board a few months ago and cut a piece of yoga mat to cover the top. Ever since I’ve just been grabbing three or 4 things at a time and setting them up for whatever I feel like playing. It’s really encouraged me to try more weird stuff (reverb into dirt, multiple delays). Once I’ve put a lot of thought into setting up a whole board, I have a hard time breaking it down to experiment.

A Boss dd-3 into a boss bf-2 has been my jam since the early 2000s. I’m a strong advocate for a simple delay into modulation. It’s my bread and butter and still do it to this day.
