they are used to adjust the light for the LDRS. after everything is built and you have a flashing light, you use the trimmer to (usually) adjust the light so it either just goes off, or does not completely go off before it brightens. you can do the set up in a dark room, put the intensity control about 75% and adjust each trimmer by ear until you like what you are hearing.
