This is an interesting little fuzz. Like a Fuzz Face, the Fuzz dial you pretty much have to dime the Fuzz control to get a good sound, but it's a bit smoother than a FF. It sounds like a more vintage (less refined) version of my Sour Grape fuzz. The tone control is a nice feature. The Fuzz dial is set up like a FF except it changes the bias of the op amp rather than the FF's transistor.
I googled pics of the originals, which were either orange and gray or purple and gray. I combined these colors and came up with this thing.
I've been trying to experiment with different color combinations lately. It's difficult trying to find two that work together. I always have my ear open for a pattern I can identify and the apply, but with colors due to the nature of each pigment being unique, there really isn't one - I have to experiment every time. Thankfully, my new primer process is robust enough so it's easy to wash off the acrylic paint if I don't like how the pedal turns out.
I like the look of a 1590b enclosure with big knobs but the 125b vs 1590b debate is always at the forefront of my development outlook. The 125b offers more room inside and seems better scaled for the size of the electronic components we use. I worked out doing top jacks on 1590b's so that isn't a differentiating factor - it really just comes down to size of circuit and (thinking ahead) ease of developing a PCB with every component board mounted.
I've tried a few different ways to get top jacks mounted on a circuit board that would play nice with the rest of the controls, but there just isn't room inside the 1590b. The limiting factor is the height, which the 125b solves. In the 125b, there is also room to use the 19mm wide Neutrik style jack with male insert nuts (lol) that don't require a daughterboard to mount to a PCB. I feel with 1590b's the audio jacks will always need to be off boarded.
I used tantalum capacitors for the values in the low uF range, like 2.2 etc.
I have a few more builds coming up. After ignoring this hobby all summer I'm going balls to the wall on production, trying to stockpile painted enclosures before winter sets in. My goal is to be able to build over the winter without resorting to pre made powdercoated enclosures, or worse, bare aluminum.
