LDR selection & the Phase II / DuoPhase

which LDRs (and LEDs) are inside your Phase II / DuoPhase ?

Since building the phase II, I’ve slowly been losing sanity.
This is due to the asymmetrical phasing pattern that i’ve observed with this circuit (so far).
Initially, i thought it was an error in my build, but i’ve noticed that other builds have demonstrated this phasing behaviour too, which did bring me some relief, but I’m fairly convinced it’s not really supposed to be asymmetrical.
(especially when you hear demos of original Mutron units, and yes, to be fair, these are built with vactrols, but still….)

my assumption is that the type of LDR is probably responsible for the (asymmetrical) phasing pattern that i’m observing…

so now i’m wondering what people are actually using for their phase II / duophase builds…
i thought it could be insightful to collect data and do a little poll and see what the broad consensus is on these little guys 🙂

9203 is

This is what I used in the latest Phase II (and the Glass Hole on my board), and it definitely gets deeper and wider than the 10720s and equivalent . The DuoPhase next in my queue will getting 9203s, too

As for the asymmetrical sweep, that's part of the design, or at least that seems to be the case, and I can hear it in the various demos of vintage units on YouTube

This is why the circuit is also a great substitute for a uni-vibe at the right settings.

sounds like i need to try some 9203…

the 10720 in mine just doesn’t seem to spend that much time in the dip - no matter what the LED is doing.
I’d very much love to get deeper and wider.

It'll still be asymmetrical, but I find it much more pleasing.

Only mods are 9203, external trims, and 10n in place of the 6.8ns in the phase stages (I have the trims labelled backward in the vid)

interesting… what effect do you think subbing 10n for 6n8 has on the phasing?

check out the asymmetrical phasing on this, right at the start with the rate on real slow - seems like such a short and shallow dip…
i would hope the 9203 can do better than this

It's negligible, but it makes for a slightly fatter overall tone. These can also be mismatched for more of a UniVibe flavor

As for the clip, I thought that sounded great 🤷‍♂️ .
I think if you're wanting the symmetrical sweep, you'll want to look at other phasers. Small Stone based circuits would be my first suggestion, and you can easily add more phase stages.

The vid demonstrates the sweep, and while it can be modified with the trims, it won't ever be symmetrical

fatter hey…. sounds like something i might prefer.

i’ve got symmetrical sweep with a phase 90, and just recently the ross phaser (OTA), but yeah the asymmetry of the phase ii has had me bugging out..

listening to your sweep demo - yep i can hear it’s asymmetrical, but yours is definitely dipping noticeably deeper than mine does. 9203?

Yep, 9203

alright, so i did some more snooping around and noticed @MichaelW talking about getting GL5516 off amazon... and I was like oh yeah no kidding, I even have a prime account... came across a number of very cheap options (mildy concerning), so i chose a set from a seller that actually provided a data/spec listing that made sense.
