I was just looking at the schematic for the Lead Solder Overdrive. I see it uses three TL072 ICs. In two of the TL072s the second stage isn't used. Why didn't they use two TL072s instead?

Crosstalk oscillation maybe?
Maybe they had designed it with 2 but we're getting oscillation so they added a third opamp. Instead of using multiple opamps or moving to 4 single opamps, they just held half of 2. Crosstalk is a pretty big concern/problem in high gain circuits.
