If you've been following my somewhat irregular build reports, you'll recall the deep rabbit hole I went down (again) with the MXR Phase 90 and Phase 45.
The first time I fell down the rabbit hole was back in 2022 when I built the XC Phase.
This most recent rabbit hole, I was just standing at the edge looking down, pretty much minding my own business, then @Guardians of the analog came and just shoved me in, and down I went.
I'm a big fan of the older "2020's" PCB form factor from Bean. Not so much the new ones. Primarily because they're much harder to get into a 1590B with top jacks!
Turns out Chris is a fan of the older boards too and he managed to procure a batch of the Nom Nom 2020.
If you've seen the recent build reports for the Nom Nom, well, @Guardians of the analog is responsible!
Seriously, many thanks to Chris for sending me not only the Nom Nom board and ALSO a Phase 45 board from @blackhatboojum !
So the Sheepy Phase 90/45 builds was an experiment using SMD JFETS. In fact those boards that @szukalski laid out have no provision for though hole JFETS at all.
We were committed! We were confident! Hahah. The 2SK208-GR SMD JFETS I used for those turned out fairly easy to match with my modified RG Keen Matcher and sound fantastic. Glad that worked out, phew....
For the Nom Nom and Peacemaker builds I was originally planning to use some matched sets of more 2SK208's and solder them onto adapters.
I had the Nom Nom pretty much built when I decided, just for S & G's to check the handful of 2N5952 TO-92 JFETs. I had about 10 in a bag I got from SmallBear many years ago. I never bothered to try matching them since I only 10 or so. Well, I'll be gobsmacked if I didn't get not only a tightly matched set of 4 for the Nom Nom but also a tightly matched pair for the Peacemaker!
I was extremely surprised. So then I decided to sample some other JFETS I had on hand. And I have a bag of 2N5484's that I have at least 3 sets that matched before I stopped. Now I feel really stupid for paying for all the matched sets I've bought over the years for some of the other phasers I've built when I've been sitting on a bunch of matched sets that would have worked fine....duhh......
The Nom Nom from MBP has a feedback toggle that sends some of the signal back through the jfet stages for more "resonance" in that mode. So equivalent to Script vs Block modes.
I had originally used the SMD JFETS but I settled on the 2N5952's for this build. These have that classic MXR Phaser sound.
@blackhatboojum 's Phase 45 was a straightforward build with just a tiny hiccup. I used the matched pair of 2N5952's in this build. It sounds killer!
Many thanks to @Guardians of the analog for making these projects happen. Thanks Clinton for the Peacemaker board!
