Modded Sandspur

I've wanted to build a modded fuzz face for a while so I decided to do a test build in an old enclosure to see if it would work out and sound any good. I wasn't going for aesthetics with this build - I just wanted to see if it worked so excuse the messy wiring and wonky pots!

I put the input 1uf cap on a switch to swap to a 47n. I put the 470R resistor on a switch to swap to a 1K resistor. There is an AMZ tone control with mids on a PCB from Fuzz dog and there is a pot swap PCB footswitch from fuzz dog as well, which swaps between the external bias pot and the internal trimpot. There is a R/B LED to notify the difference. The bias is a little off at present so I need to play with that a little.

I have BC183 in at present.

It sounds great. The bass cut is definitely the most useful mod IMO.

That is pretty awesome! Nice work!! What hfe’s did you chose for your 183’s?

I bought 5 of them - not sure why I didn’t get more.

They all test from 340-356 so from the data sheet it looks like they are BC183Bs.

I am going to get a few more from another supplier to see if I can play around and match a set together that sound good. Or I might try and mix a lower hfe BC108 in Q1 and a BC183 in Q2.
