New bass day has arrived and it's been a long time coming. I found this peavey t40 body and Mexican jbass neck online for super cheap over a year ago and have been slowly collecting the rest of the parts. My first bass was a Mexican J and when I dropped it in highschool breaking 2 tuners, I had to borrow a bass from my trumpet players dad, his trusty Peavey. I've since had a deep fondness for the look of a t40 but not so much the sound. Perhaps I've committed a sin but I'm pretty happy with it.
The neck was far more trashed than advertised. The skunk stripe had opened up and would separate when adjusting the truss rod among many other issues. Thankfully I was able to successfully repair it so it got refinished in tru-oil (except for that logo
) and some lightweight Gotoh tuners. The body had to have much more wood removed to get all the electronics in there but all in all it was a pretty easy project.
Hardest part was cutting the pickguard. Both my laminate router and my oscillating spindle sander took a shit right when I needed them so this pickguard was made with mostly hand files and sand paper. Far from perfect, likely to be remade eventually.
The guts are a Novak H22 in the neck, a Novak EB-BSx middle, and a Mojo jazzmaster jbass in the bridge position. The H22 is much hotter than I expected and therefore a good bit louder than the others but I'm otherwise very very happy with this configuration. I threw the Tesi switch in for funsies. There's also a tropical fish cap on the tone pot because I almost never adjust tone pots and I think I'm funny.
I had a special Joseph Pujol neck plate made up for this too. Mentaltossflybass.
