NGD...yet again

No pics, no Larrivee.
Just sayin'...

When I was in the bike-industry, I'd cycle past the Larrivee factory in East Van every day on my way to work, and wished I was working at Larrivee (would've been a 5-minute bicycle-commute instead of an hour). Then Larrivee moved operations State-side, which would've been an even longer bicycle-commute...

I applied there a couple times, it was a cool place.

I get some pics up tonite. Being an ex-pat I get the best of both worlds with Canadian heritage and US production. I worked in Gordie Brandt's Music in Saskatoon when I was a kid and Normann was the big seller. I think Larrivee's started hitting the scene shortly after but I've wanted one for as long as I can remember.

If I ever buy an acoustic guitar it will probably be a Gibson. Maybe a J45 but hopefully a J185. I love the sound of the 24 3/3" scale on an acoustic. It has more chunk to the sound than 25 1/2". I had a J185 for a while and it was very handy for showing the singer in my band at the time how to sing the songs - I'd play and sing to teach the songs then she'd sing and I'd record her singing and me playing to show the rest of the band. My singing was not recording-worthy!

But since that band folded I sold it. And now I look at how much a J185 costs and cringe. I really like the sound of those shorter scale Gibsons. They have a kind of gut-punch I've never heard from a Martin. Less of a jingle-jangle; more of a kerrang!

A couple of REAL GEM's there!!!

My latest NGD is a NBD. New Bouzouki day. It's like a mandolin, but in the lower octave like a guitar. Tuned GDAD, two strings per note the same size and octave (not one higher like a 12 string). The result is a thicker louder sound. Amazing how much volume this thing makes. $300-ish direct from Romania.... The teardrop shape and 4" depth results in an interesting reverb-ish sustain. It's amazingly pleasant to play.

It's a tad frustrating to hit so many wrong notes, but I'm getting there lol....

My first jam just before I intonated it, so it's kinda sharp when I get up to the 12th fret and I just hit a harmonic and called it done.
