New Old Amp Comes Home Again Day.

Those who know me, know that I am a Kiwi living in Germany, but I left most of my gear in NZ when I moved here.
Over the last few visits, my guitars have come over, either with me or family visiting, but there were a bunch of amps which haven't made the trip.

Before I found my lovely (German) wife, I had started collecting older gear in NZ. There are a bunch of homegrown amps which were made in NZ during the 60s and 70s whilst import tariffs were high (tariffs/customs are my arch enemy!) and they were starting to go into disrepair fairly cheap to find when I was collecting (2005-2010). These amps generally start as a clone of a Fender design with some "improvements". I really enjoyed the ones I found, although I didn't have my load box/amp sim rig that I have now which allows me to crank the master volume.

Unfortunately, over the last few trips, I have been trying to remove the burden of holding stuff left at my parent's house, so most of the amps have been sold but two remained. One of them is recent, but too heavy to travel with (a Carvin Legacy VL212 at nearly 40kg / 88lb), so I will convert it to a head in a future trip. The other is this little beauty, which I risked to bring back.. the trip itself was long and relatively uneventful, but for those who don't follow foreign news, Auckland airport was under a foot of water and had to completely shutdown for a couple of days half a week before we had to travel.

Enough of a personal story.. here's the juicy..

This is a Jansen 6/20. 6 tubes, 20 watts. I need to do more research to be certain of the year. I believe it is a 1967. Think a Bassman with tremolo. My memory is amazing cleans with a tone of headroom.

I haven't been game to turn it on yet, it is a great-grandparent which hasn't been used in nearly 6 years so I want to do some testing before taking a gamble on anything. That said, I know nothing on where to start, so more to research..

What's interesting is that it still has it's original tubes. Check those babies out! RCA and Philips! Old enough to have the markings eroded..

My aim is to turn this into my clean pedal platform, but first it needs a bunch of work.

I'd love to see inside that amp! And I didn't realise you were a Kiwi - I thought you were Polish. Bloody Kiwis get everywhere! I have to admit to a sneaking admiration of Kiwis - it's rare that I meet a Kiwi I don't like, and the Kiwi sense of adventure knows no bounds. Just when I think I've gone somewhere really remote I'll meet a Kiwi already there. Choice eh bru.

Flattery will get you everywhere! Not a Pole, just enjoy the artist.. I have often wondered about the good impression of kiwis world-wide, I think it's survivor bias, only the good ones get thrown out of the country!

Here are some pics, she's an old girl, and I don't have a clue where to start testing before powering her on, but I am keen to read and learn!

That is a sweet amp! I've always wanted to make it down to NZ. I used to do a fair amount of writing and playtesting for a gaming company in Auckland... still do some writing and proofreading from time to time.

I don't know, I toured through northern NZ before heading to Brisbane through Melbourne and I'm pretty sure that I was the biggest asshole around wherever I went. I experienced nothing but kindness and generosity in both countries. Also pie. Lots of gas station meat pie.

... and then there's the Deep-Fried Moro bars...

Had my first, probably my last, from a chip/pizza shop that had already shut down for the night, so the deep-fryer oil had cooled. The batter still cooked, but it also then soaked up the oil...

MTB'd all over from just north of Auckland down to Queenstown, did a bit of Snowboarding, too... What a great place, and one of my dearest friends, Kiwi, he ... got kicked out, too, and lived all over the world... Oztraylyah, Hongkers, Kay-mans, My Ami, I'llaskya...

Yeah, it's pretty laid back and cruisy. There are a bunch of c*nts around, the good c*nts are good. The bad ones, less so. NZ does a mean meat pie though!

Deep-fried Moros are too sweet for me. I can barely handle a pineapple fritter.

Moro bars! I had forgotten about them. I haven't seen one (deep-fried or not) for ages! I used to really like them - much better than a Mars Bar. But I don't eat that stuff much any more. I'll have to keep an eye out in case I see one somewhere...

Kiwis always say that the north and south islands are very different. Well in Australia it's the east and west which are so different. Well, it's a big country so it's all different! But I think the east coast is so beautiful (except where it's been over developed) and it's incredibly different from the west coast where I live. It's a lot drier over here with no rainforest.

I've only been to Auckland in NZ, which all the Kiwis told me was the arsehole of NZ. Some arsehole! If that's the worst of NZ I can't wait to see the rest.

Great amp. The guts have a Canadian Traynor/Garnet vibe to them with all the parts hanging out in space. Would love to hear it.
I fired her up, only channel 2 is working (for now).

If you make it to Germany, pop round, else the sound demos below will have to be your next best thing (for now).

Ignore the lack of playing, tuning, mastering, just straight LP neck pickup @ 70% to the amp. I am just a plug and record guy, I can't perfect like @MichaelW can!

1/4 vol:
1/2 vol:
3/4 vol:
Full vol:
1/4 vol with tremolo on 40%:

That's a great sounding amp! Was it blowing the doors off at full volume?
That's some pretty fancy playing for a "I'm just a guitar into amp kinda guy", awesome stuff Dave!

Sounds great with pedals. Got the first channel working but now the tremolo doesn't work anymore..

That was through the Captor / CAB-M with a Marshall 4x12 IR/sim. I can't do guitar speakers properly at home, plus these things are meant to be cranked!
