New Old Amp Comes Home Again Day.
Those who know me, know that I am a Kiwi living in Germany, but I left most of my gear in NZ when I moved here.
Over the last few visits, my guitars have come over, either with me or family visiting, but there were a bunch of amps which haven't made the trip.
Before I found my lovely (German) wife, I had started collecting older gear in NZ. There are a bunch of homegrown amps which were made in NZ during the 60s and 70s whilst import tariffs were high (tariffs/customs are my arch enemy!) and they were starting to go into disrepair fairly cheap to find when I was collecting (2005-2010). These amps generally start as a clone of a Fender design with some "improvements". I really enjoyed the ones I found, although I didn't have my load box/amp sim rig that I have now which allows me to crank the master volume.
Unfortunately, over the last few trips, I have been trying to remove the burden of holding stuff left at my parent's house, so most of the amps have been sold but two remained. One of them is recent, but too heavy to travel with (a Carvin Legacy VL212 at nearly 40kg / 88lb), so I will convert it to a head in a future trip. The other is this little beauty, which I risked to bring back.. the trip itself was long and relatively uneventful, but for those who don't follow foreign news, Auckland airport was under a foot of water and had to completely shutdown for a couple of days half a week before we had to travel.
Enough of a personal story.. here's the juicy..
This is a Jansen 6/20. 6 tubes, 20 watts. I need to do more research to be certain of the year. I believe it is a 1967. Think a Bassman with tremolo. My memory is amazing cleans with a tone of headroom.
I haven't been game to turn it on yet, it is a great-grandparent which hasn't been used in nearly 6 years so I want to do some testing before taking a gamble on anything. That said, I know nothing on where to start, so more to research..
What's interesting is that it still has it's original tubes. Check those babies out! RCA and Philips! Old enough to have the markings eroded..
My aim is to turn this into my clean pedal platform, but first it needs a bunch of work.
