Noise Gates

Where are my metal heads at? I finally am sick of my ISP Deci-mate Mini. I've had it for a while and it has been great but my gig this past weekend was the final straw. Just too unreliable for me. Plus, to save space, it uses an 1/8" adapter cable and that is wonky.

I have 0 interest tracking down a THAT chip for the Muzzle build and the Muffler just isn't enough. I need something that supports the 4-cable method. I use a PPCB Dwarven Hammer slamming the dirty channel of my Marshall DSL100H and it is noisy. So, I put the gate in the effects loop and in front of the amp. I'm in a Godsmack tribute band (no judgement) so there is a lot of start/stop staccato riffs but also need that sweet sustain to not get choked out.

I think I may have narrowed it down to the Zuul+ or the Revv G8. Anyone have experience with either of these or any other suggestions?

The Stone Deaf Noise Reaper also looks interesting too.

I've used ISP Decimator X G-String. Good but too much $
Boss NS-2 and Monte Allums modded NS-2. Sucks tone
TC Electronic Sentry. Meh
EHX Silencer - Lame

And if anyone gives the "You should fix the noise in your rig and you won't need a gate" can bump right off.

I have a Muzzle and I like it a lot. Replaced my NS-2, it's better in a way (tighter and faster while also being smooth) but the NS-2 is a really solid option. The tone suck is basically insignificant if you have a buffer in front.

While I will avoid saying your best noise gates are your left fingers and right palm, the Dwarven Hammer is far from a silent pedal. There is a reason why the original Precision Drive has a built in gate.

Are you using the Muzzle in the effects loop or in front of the amp before noisy pedals? Or both?

I have the Zuul+ and ran the Dwarven Hammer with it into a Mesa Mark V. It was a great combo for that amp.

My main amp right now is a GT120 clone (not high gain) and I ended up replacing the Hammer with a Super Duper clone (double SHO). I leave the Zuul+ and one SHO channel on nearly all the time, don’t touch the settings, and use a variety of guitars (Strandberg with Thornbuckers, baritone Tele with singles, Ibanez Baritone with Suhr SSH+/SSV).

I don’t remember the Hammer being that noisy but I kept the gain very low on it and just used it for EQ sculpting and boost.

I’ve only ever ran the Zuul+ near the start of chain.

Guptech makes the mwac, which I'm fairly certain is a zuul clone with 4 cables. If you don't want to search high and low for that chip...I did...it's a reasonably cheap alternative.
I had one before I started building and it was great.

FWIW: I built two each of the STFU and the Decimator II earlier this year and was amazed to discover how nearly perfectly matched they are in performance. The STFu requires far fewer components than the Decimator II. And I found them both reliable and was able to set & forget.

I’m using a dwarven hammer into an C2C super sonic(Uberschall) you want to talk about noisy 🤣…. But I have 2 muzzles one after the hammer and the other after the Uberschall.. making the range switch is importan but once you get them dialed in it’s as tight and articulate as I could want. Although I have noticed that the muzzles do seem to boost the signal a bit not a bad thing no clipping just something I noticed. I like just the one knob and switch keep be from endlessly fussing with them.

Thats sounds very similar to what im dealing with. Im also wondering about using 2 as well. And the boost is actually a good thing imo. Thanks for the insight.

Well. This changes things...

Well it's an option, at least.

I haven't traced a Zuul+ yet but I suspect it's basically the same circuit as the Revv G8 (based on the THAT design note).

If I were going to buy a gate it'd be one of those two. I believe you can get the G8 new from Revv for cheaper than a used Zuul+.
