Now Playing... What are you Listening to Right Now?

I found out last night that my cousin George was taken off life support - he apparently had an infection that got in to his blood last year and he never really recovered and things went down hill for him very fast these past couple of weeks.

We weren't close as he was about 10 years older than me growing up but I have some good memories of my time with him. He was an incredible musician - a classically trained bassist who is also a really great guitar player, writer, and singer. He did a lot of work with Pete Anderson, who produced the studio albums he did make, and if you're a fan of Dwight Yoakam you probably know who he is.

His CD is the only one I have in my car, and it's been in my CD player since he sent it to me years ago. I got in this morning and gave it a listen. I wish he had more of his music online but he wasn't really big on social media or anything like that.

Anyways, I just wanted to share a couple of his songs. If you like Americana/country you might enjoy this.

Sorry for your loss Joe. Rest in peace George.

Sometimes friends/colleagues do cool shit and you're stoked. Sometimes it makes you want to vomit like when I saw a crushing jazz bassist I used to jam with playing terrible pop punk on Colbert, don't get me wrong I'm stoked for that dude. I'm quite excited about this one though. A little less high profile, a lot less pop punk.

I first heard him on Eberhard Weber's 'Later that evening,' playing these tasty volume swells that always seem to add to the conversation in interesting and appropriate ways. Been following him ever since ... this TMM is a retro gem, suffused with humour and good taste.

My wife introduced me to Ted Leo when we met 15 or so years ago and this song always stuck out as my favorite of his.

It gets in my head sometimes and just refuses to leave, which isn't really a bad thing.

I've been listening to a SHIP-TONNE of stuff, wayyy too much to keep up with spamming this thread.

'60s and '70s TV theme shows;
Spy/Surf and Metal-without-distortion (surfified metal);
Jazz with hang drums my friend is sending me,
Soundtrack stuff in the vein of John Barry, Roy Budd and the almighty Ennio Morricone...
Blues to guide a friend to finding some interesting blues he might like instead of the same-ol' same-ol' 12-Boring, ahem 12-Bar repetitive guitar wankery...

All the above to to fuel the potential fire of a spark lit under my instrumental spyish-surfy sounding project. If we can find a drummer, this thing may actually (finally) take off like a Bond car chase...

Yesh, Aye is excite.

Man.... I wish someone had put enough light on the bassist so I can see what he's got there? I can tell it's weird but I have no idea what it is.

It's a Gumbass. You get a couple better shots of Charles Lucas playing it around the 55-56 minute mark.

Here's Loy Ehrlich playing a "Gumbass".

It is loosely based on a guembri, but the Gumbass has a modern-style bass-guitar neck with four strings — whereas a true guembri is like a drumhead with a stick for a neck and 3 strings (one of which is used as a drone).

I got to play my friend's Moroccan guembri a couple of times, loads of fun.

Here's a guembri that belongs to someone you might know...

More of Ehrlich ...

Here he's playing mostly keys (and Kora), but a Gumbass is in his hands at 39-min mark:
