Overdrive with 2N5088 and TL072?

Hello all,

This might be an impossible question but I will give it a shot anyway :)

I have the following components left over from previous builds:

2N5088 transistors
TL072 op amp
BAT46 diodes

I want to build some kind of overdrive pedal. Does anyone know a suitable circuit?

I know these are cheap components and I could just buy new ones for whatever pedal I want, but somehow I think it's nice to use what I have instead of throwing them away.

Thanks in advance

Hey there

First of all, (I don't know if that was a figure of speech or not 🤔) I'd recommend never throwing away any components. Always something they could go in down the line.

Second, I point to this page a lot. Lots of good ideas. They link to vero board projects without showing the schematics, but a google search will solve that. https://dvhx.github.io/what-can-i-build/search.html

I mean, with two thirds of that list you have you could build a tube screamer, but that's more drivestortion that a """pure""" overdrive, if that's what you're looking for.

those are all pretty general purpose parts, the resistors and cap values you have on hand will make more of a difference...but never throw away components as @jessenator said, that's silly.

I keep a stash of at least 50 or so 2n5088s on hand just in case, because they usually do the job anywhere. Honestly my favourite transistor.

You could easily build a Tubescreamer with those. Using the BAT46s instead of 1N914s would make a TS808 sound better IMO. But a TS is a bit boring... You could build a Big Muff with 2N5088s and a Timmy with the TL072.

What would I build with 2N5088s? Big Muff, Scarab Deluxe, Alter Destiny, Lovepedal Tchula, Brownout OD (Variac), even a Colorsound Overdrive.
