Overdrive with 2N5088 and TL072?

Hello all,

This might be an impossible question but I will give it a shot anyway :)

I have the following components left over from previous builds:

2N5088 transistors
TL072 op amp
BAT46 diodes

I want to build some kind of overdrive pedal. Does anyone know a suitable circuit?

I know these are cheap components and I could just buy new ones for whatever pedal I want, but somehow I think it's nice to use what I have instead of throwing them away.

Thanks in advance

Hey there

First of all, (I don't know if that was a figure of speech or not 🤔) I'd recommend never throwing away any components. Always something they could go in down the line.

Second, I point to this page a lot. Lots of good ideas. They link to vero board projects without showing the schematics, but a google search will solve that. https://dvhx.github.io/what-can-i-build/search.html

I mean, with two thirds of that list you have you could build a tube screamer, but that's more drivestortion that a """pure""" overdrive, if that's what you're looking for.

those are all pretty general purpose parts, the resistors and cap values you have on hand will make more of a difference...but never throw away components as @jessenator said, that's silly.

I keep a stash of at least 50 or so 2n5088s on hand just in case, because they usually do the job anywhere. Honestly my favourite transistor.

You could easily build a Tubescreamer with those. Using the BAT46s instead of 1N914s would make a TS808 sound better IMO. But a TS is a bit boring... You could build a Big Muff with 2N5088s and a Timmy with the TL072.

What would I build with 2N5088s? Big Muff, Scarab Deluxe, Alter Destiny, Lovepedal Tchula, Brownout OD (Variac), even a Colorsound Overdrive.

I encourage you to throw away as much surplus components you can, just PM me for my address and I'll pay for the shipping and I'll be sure to dispose of them properly.

Yeah, seriously though — what Hamish said. YATS came immediately to mind. The 5088s for the buffers and the TL072 for the sizzle with BAT46 handling the clippage.

@Nostradoomus — I don't know why 2N5088s are so popular. The 2N5089 has lower noise and a smidge more gain — works pretty much anywhere a 5088 works. ;-p

Overdrives...
Yeah, YATS and anything related ... TIMMIEs, DOD250 with some boosts/buffers/twists... Electra-derivitives (ie LovePoodal)...

Build a YATS with some switch-in-able Fuzz from a Si FF or BazzFuss... make something really versatile.

I think the question should be, what can't you build with a few 5088s, TL072s and BAT46s...

I am not familiar with YATS, is there a schematic available for that?

One of the many acronyms in the DIY world: Yet Another Tube Screamer

Many YATS projects out there. Go to the PPCB store and search 'scream' and you'll be plied with plenty of choice.

Aha, thanks for the reply. I was guessing it was an acronym but I could not quite figure it out :)
