Day 2 of Mike Wong's build report dump......:)

This is @szukalski 's layout of Dylan159's (from FSB) PT2399 Delay.

I've been pretty much a die hard analog BBD delay guy with my goto being the pair of MadBean DMM's
as well as @blackhatboojum's Boss DM-2 and @dan.schumaker 's DM-3. I'd left PT2399 and FV-1 delays behind. (Or so I thought)

So when Dave was telling that this is his favorite delay I was a bit skeptical. But I have a bunch of PT2399 IC's that I bought many years ago so I figured, what the hell, let's build one and see.

Well I have to admit I was a bit gobsmacked at how good this delay sounds. The only other 2399 delay I really like is the Deep Blue Delay (Seabed)
so comparisons between the two are a given. The Pelota has less filtering on the repeats than the Deep Blue, which is designed to emulate a BBD delay.
But at the same time, the repeats on the Pelota are not at all sterile but have an organic feel to them.
Dylan also tapped into the modulation in the PT2399 (See my linked post for the Deep Blue) but he did an awesome job implementing it.
The modulation is similar to the Deluxe Memory Man and can be overwhelming. But dialed very low it adds to the awesomeness of this pedal.

In some ways in my mind at least, it's like a digital DMM. Not saying it sounds like a DMM but for me I can use them both the same way (I'll get to that in a second).

It doesn't have that "wash" that you get from the DMM, it's more articulate and of course there's less noise. The attack of the repeats is more like the Boss DM-3.

@szukalski 's layout is killer and this is a super easy build.

The way I typically use delays is to use 2x in series with a dotted 1/8 Into a 1/4 note, a la Andy Timmons. Before Andy got his own signature delay with a preset for his "halo" sound, he was using a Strymon Timeline. Before he got the Strymon he used two vintage big box Deluxe Memory Man's (Men). I bought a Timeline and used a single preset, which was their Dual Delay. Then when that seemed silly to me, I sold it and went back to using my Strymon El Cap. When I got into DIY, and getting into Bean's DMM analog delays was really coming full circle and being able to replicate Andy Timmon's circa 2002-2003 delay sound, which has become a staple of my sound.

All this to preface that I dug the Pelota 2 so much that built a second one to run in series for my dual delay sound. It's a perfect alternative to my dual DMM's.
I love how both sound and switch between the Dual Pelota's and Dual DMM's depending on my mood, which guitar, which overdrive, etc, that I'm using.

I goofed on where I put the LED on the second one. Dave has Faceplates for this pedal with his "behind the faceplate" LED indicator thing.
I haven't ordered the faceplates yet but if and when I do I may re-house the gray one with the LED in the right place for it.
These are sitting in the efx loop of my rig. which is getting crowded with 6 delays pretty much always hooked up.

PCB's : I think I have 2 spare boards for the Pelota 2 if interested. DM me.

Thanks @szukalski and Dylan for another awesome Sheepy project!!

I just realized I don't have the faceplate, or the Gerbers for this (I was thinking of the Texel). Does anyone have a link to Gerbers for the faceplate? I don't see them on Github.

i've built a couple of these now. spectacular design. i reduce the mod depth to a 10k pot because it gets a little wild, and i add a tone control so that it has the option of being more murky. at the end of the day, more feature rich than the mag echo or faux tape echo
I'm curious where you place the tone control - somewhere in the feedback loop off pin 16 of the PT2399?

I’ve yet to build a delay but this seems right up my alley. I’m an always on dotted eighth and quarter note with a DMM and Boss DD-200. I would also like to buy a board off someone if you have a spare. With faceplate is preferable but if all you have is the board that’s fine by me! 🤞

Hey Don,

I'm out of Pelota boards, sorry.
Gotta pull the trigger faster hahah.

I'm going to order some boards from jlcpcb, anyone want one? @bluemc777

Will probably take a week or two to get them, maybe more with the (butterfly?) festival going on. Also I'm in Canada sorta close to the Washington border so snailmail might take a while depending on where you are.

@dcfvgb If my good friend @MattG cant take care of me I certainly do. If you got the faceplates I’ll certainly give a donation for one.
I only have the gerber files for the pcb. Planning on the minimum 5 boards for now, I'll keep 2, save 1 for you. I'll wait a couple days to see if anyone else wants one then place the order.

@MichaelW If you still have the left over delay chips, I would suggest this build. It is a fantastic delay with tap temp and modulation.

Ooof, too many knobs hahaha

Seems an odd choice considering all the cool delays you’ve built.

I still think the Keeley Mag Echo has a great mod section which is supposedly lifted from his Seafoam chorus pedal. The delay itself is certainly on the darker side but you can do a lot with minimum delay and the mod section alone.

It gives you an idea of how good this delay sounds...hahah. I'm a pretty diehard analog delay guy so putting these in my signal chain as an alternative is pretty out of character for me heh.

I have five of these PCBs, minus the one going to @bluedmc777, I have four left free to whoever wants one. @dcfvgb - if you only need one I can save you the fabrication cost.
