Pets of PedalPCB

My dad had two cats for the longest time, both of them passed away last year not too far apart. Several months later I finally convinced him to adopt a new kitty. He picked out a very quiet/timid Siamese and named him Preston, but once he got he got used to his new environment Preston opened up and is very full of energy and personality. He's a very handsome boy, and his favorite thing to do is to groom my dad's hair while my Dad sits on the couch!

Just got back from the follow-up at the vet. He's doing incredibly well, vet says he just needs to finish this two week of antibiotics and he should be good to go.

Because our household is fueled by chaos, what’s a little more? Due to a friend’s stepdaughter’s Craigslist indiscretion behind her parent’s back and their subsequent and understandable response of “we have too many dogs already” the Diynot family finds themselves the owners of this little nugget

She is a 10 week old AKC registered German Shepherd. Her name is Riju. Named so by our kids after a Zelda character. She is smart as a whip having learned sit, down, up, come, paw, high five, as well as being able to ring some sleigh bells on the door to go out in a matter of a week mostly due to the dedication of my wife. She and our cat Kingsley IMG_4985.jpeg are slowly working out their differences. He has only had to swat her twice so far. We are working on getting her socialized with trips over to see my oldest doing marching band camp so she gets the noise and the people all in one. It’s def going to be an adventure since we have never had a puppy let alone one that will grow to possibly 75lbs. We start puppy classes in 2 weeks. Wish us luck and if anybody has any new puppy training tips they are greatly appreciated.

This is not our cat. However it follows me around outdoors in the garden, sits beside me whilst I'm doing stuff, and sits patiently waiting for a treat at 6pm.

There's method behind our madness. We give it only non-fishy treat at 6pm each day for two reasons - it has adopted our garden and so we don't see other cats in it and secondly it the non-fish treats means it doesn't associate the smell of fish with food. We've had one very dominant cat attempt to muscle in and kept attempting to get the fish. After getting trapped in the pond netting and being scared lifeless we've never seen that cat again but our regular cat seems happy to sit in the garden without worrying the fish. He also keeps the 7 magpies we had at one point away from the pond - they cost a fortune in stolen fish food. She lives across the road and we know the owners.

So our actual pets are some pet shop koi in a 14,000l pond. The two large grass carp boys here are about 15 years old.

I designed and built the pond to operate on air. So it consumes 58W total by using airlifts instead of pumps although in summer I run a small slow pump and a UV clarifier to prevent it from greening up. The pond goes down 1.85 meters from the top of the window and is constructed with a concrete base, dense blocks sides and is lined with fibreglass. There's a filter system housed to one side but you can't see that.
I need to fix last winter's frost damage to the rendering and tiles before the winter, but we've had a heat wave and so that's not the best time to sit outside with plaster/adhesive setting in minutes..

I'd love to hit you up for how to do that Koi Pond, especially the air-lift part... would be a great gift for my wife!

Alas, there are two good reasons for me NOT to request such info:
A) The pond would need to be drained and filled, autumn and spring — what to do with the Koi over the Long GWN Winter?
B) I'm lazy.

Some of the US folks on the koi forums do seem to have a quite a short warm season, others seem to have the opposite so it depends on your climate zoning. In the south of the UK we tend to have mild winters but I have had one at -17degC which was enough to put an inch thick layer of ice over the smaller pond. Koi realistically need a warm period to wake up, property digest proteins in the food and grow otherwise they'll sit at the bottom in a stupor to save energy. The tubes and filters are about 30 meters of 110mm (4") tubing underground. It's also not heated. Some nutcases heat theirs using gas boilers etc - I can't imagine what the running costs would be!

This is the late Afridi in better times. When first he arrived (in 2014), we weren’t sure of his gender so he was first called Frida. Later on we discovered that he was a boy so we called him after the great Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, whose nickname was Boom-Boom.

He was a real character with a clownish sense of humour and much loved by us both. In later years exposure to the South African sun scarred him badly and he developed rampant skin cancer. We took him to the vet for the last time and put him in his resting place in the garden just now. Farewell Afridi, and thanks for the lovely memories.
