Question about led in tv remote control.

A friend is building this device, a "tv-b-gone" :

It made me wonder what kind of led are used in these devices. Are they some more sophisticated components able to send some waves of signal from a distance ? If so, how do you call them ? Or are they just like the usual led we often use in stompboxes ?

Should just be IR (infrared) which is not in a humans visible light spectrum.

Ok, and I guess all screens have some IR sensor... remote controls won't work with an usual led as replacement.
