Can I substitute the LT1054CP charge pump for TC1044SCPA specified in the parts list? Or, alternately, can I use a NPN germanium transistor and omit the charge pump, or would I need to jumper the socket (1 and 5?)? Thanks!

You can use the 1044, there should be a small (SMD small) jumper pad on the solder side you can fill.

Using NPN should be fine too, jumper 1-5 and reverse your electrolytic cap polarity.
