Red Llama with 4069UBDC

A while back a friend found a heap of obscure ICs and knowing that I dabble in amps and pedals he brought them around to see if I could use them. Amongst them was a tube of 4069UBDC 14 pin ICs. I drew up a layout for a version of the Red Llama to try with this chip then promptly forgot about it.

Today for whatever reason I thought I would build it. I didn't have high expectations, having built the standard Red Llama a few times before. But for some reason this one sounds way better - maybe it's the gear I'm using it with which I didn't try it with before - but wow. I am currently trying it with a Les Paul and with a Strat (not at the same time!) into a 50W Plexi style combo and it sounds amazing! Just the pedal on it's own is excellent, but when I use it as a boost with a couple of favourite ODs it's even better. It doesn't seem quite as gainy as I remember but then it has been a while. It doesn't get into distortion or fuzz territory by itself but it adds thickness and if cranked gets a little more compressed and creamy. But I like it with gain at around noon (or lower if used as a boost). It is a bit noisier than most of my pedals but it's not obnoxious.

Could the 4069 be why it has less gain or am I not remembering the Red Llama correctly? Whatever - into my plexi it sounds fantastic and is one of the best sounding boosts I have tried. Has anyone else tried this?

My friend is a guitar tech who got a new job in a place where he looks after music gear of all kinds. They used to have an electronics guy there but no longer. There was loads of ICs and stuff so he brought them around in case I could use them. I think most of them are for more complex gear than I can comprehend!
