This is my second stripboard build, a Reeves Electric Zo, their take on the silicon Zonk II fuzz. I used a layout from Dirtbox Layouts. Great sounding pedal! For transistors I used a pair of 2N2222s at around 200hFE. The Zo has really nice clarity throughout the sweep of the Drift (gain/fuzz) knob. There is no mud to be found here, even at the higher gain settings. The Texture knob pans from smooth (full clockwise) to velcro-y (11:00) to dying robot noises (full counterclockwise). My favorite tones here are with the Drift knob set before 12:00 and Texture around 3:00. Lots of good and usable sounds though!
Like the Astrotone that I built previously this fuzz plays very well with humbuckers and gets into overdrive territory at the lower gain settings. Highly recommended for the fuzz aficionado, but may even do the trick for a fuzz hater!
I decorated the enclosure based on vintage Zonk IIs. To get a blue-ish hamertone finish I mixed artists oil paints into silver Rustoleum hammered brush-on paint. The results were pretty fantastic, but I got a little too excited and rushed things along too fast: I decorated with white paint pen and clear coated about 48 hours (or it might have even been less) after applying the hammered finish, and that was not long enough for it to cure completely. As a result, the paint kind of crinkled and doesn't look as nice as it could have. I'm still pretty happy with it though! Live and learn and then get Loves? Or at least live and learn and then give your paint enough time to cure!
