Reusing the detector in a boneyard delegate for a noise gate?

inb4 but why: in some styles of metal it's common to use an aggressive gate for an exaggerated percussive effect and run a compressor into it to keep it from being stuttery. A compressor already has an envelope(?) detector so I figured I might as well reuse it.

I'm thinking of using the voltage in the detector near the LED to open a fet between the audio path and ground, maybe with an SPST in the way to make it switchable. Is this possible and is there anything I need to look out for?

Specifically thinking of connecting the source between C5 and C9 and the gate somewhere between D5 and the 2N5089s, but I'm not entirely sure what the voltages will look like at rest or if I'd need a P channel.
