RIP Pat Martino…

Pat Martino has been one of my favorite guitarists for a while. I’m a second-generation student of his (my jazz teacher studied under him). He was kind of out there…as in he would look at the stars and try and ‘play’ then by putting them on staff paper…

I regret never having met the guy. Anyway, not sure if anyone has heard of him. But it’s a drag.

I remember hearing about his stroke several years ago and how he managed to come back and learn how to play all over again.

The wikipedia page says he had a chronic lung condition. A bit more digging, and an article mentions that he started smoking at age 8. (Not sure when he quit). Emphysema is not a great way to go.

So I guess that puts him with recent musicians Eddie Van Halen and David Bowie and a long list of others that were taken due to smoking.

I had the fortune of attending a masterclass with him in Philly. Such an amazing person and incredible musician. I have loved his music for many years. I found out he died this morning and I’m still in shock.
