This is a board I got from @MichaelW. It's one he really likes and gets a lot of praise in the sense of a.low gain overdrive or boost. It's a Timmy variant that has a slightly different voicing. I had high hopes that I would like it pushing my Marshall...well I don't.

I don't think I would like a Timmy either. It's pretty bland, and stiff feeling. Uninspired is how I describe it. I compared it to many other lower gain drives and pretty much everything else I liked more. Oh well, now I know. I like something with a bit more character and compression. I think it's more suited to edge of breakup tones and rhythm playing. But for leads, gotta have that mid push and saturation.

The build itself was excellent as are all of Dave's pcbs. No film on bare enclosure. Maybe I'll find a use for this, or maybe I'll throw it on FB marketplace. Next one will definitely be a keeper 😂

Don't forget my commission, oh and Dave's too.

I agree with both @Guardians of the analog and @szukalski. The stock Timmy is bland, as are so many very popular pedals. At least it is to me. It's a perfectly good OD and would be great for stacking (which hadn't occurred to me because I rarely stack pedals). But I like more colour and personality in pedals. And in people too, I guess. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think the Lightspeed is even blander, and it's very popular amongst the players in my area. I built one and was almost insulted by how wishy-washy and bland it was. Like talking to an accountant.

By itself, I agree with your assessment of the Lightspeed 100 percent.

ODs, in general and in my experience, are made or broken in their environments, e.g., the pickups feeding them and the amps they're feeding, and how free you are to crank those amps.

That said, the Lightspeed shines for me in two places: (1) adding a little harmonic flavor to a "clean" tone, and (2) the second stage of a stack with an OD capable of adding more dirt.
